Robert Kiyosaki’s public story runs from an early business venture that Rich Dad says nearly pushed him into bankruptcy to the 1997 release of Rich Dad Poor Dad and the financial-education business built around it. But the available sources do not establish that he became a multimillionaire: they provide no independently verified personal net-worth figure. The early near-bankruptcy account is also distinct from the 2012 bankruptcy of Rich Global LLC, a company associated with his business.

How Kiyosaki’s career began

From Xerox to the Rippers wallet business

Rich Dad’s official biography says Kiyosaki worked at Xerox before starting Rippers with his brother. The company marketed a nylon-and-Velcro wallet aimed at surfers. Rich Dad’s biography describes the product’s reception this way: “Though the product was an instant success, the business was not.”

The same biography says the venture brought periods of financial struggle that “almost forced him into bankruptcy.” This is Rich Dad’s account of the early business setbacks, not documentation that Kiyosaki personally filed for bankruptcy.

How Rich Dad Poor Dad became the turning point

Building a financial-education business

Rich Dad’s company history says Robert and Kim Kiyosaki reached a point in 1994 when they had $10,000 in monthly passive income and $3,000 in monthly expenses. Those figures are the company’s account of their finances, not independently verified records. The company says they went on to build a financial-education business around a board game and a book.

Self-publishing the book

Rich Dad says publisher rejections led the couple to self-publish Rich Dad Poor Dad in April 1997. Penguin Random House India gives the first publication date as April 8, 1997. The book’s central device is a contrast between Kiyosaki’s biological father and his friend Mike’s father, whose different approaches to money and work frame its lessons. That contrast is the book’s own narrative and teaching framework, not independent verification of every biographical detail or financial claim it presents.

Recognition and reported sales

Rich Dad’s biography places Kiyosaki’s widespread recognition in 1997. At the book’s 25-year milestone in 2022, Penguin Random House India reported sales of more than 40 million copies and translations into 38 languages. Rich Dad’s own book page calls it the number-one personal finance book. These are claims made by the respective publishers.

What the bankruptcy accounts actually say

Early financial struggle was not a documented personal filing

The early episode is described on Rich Dad’s biography page as financial struggle that nearly forced Kiyosaki into bankruptcy. The sources cited here do not document a personal bankruptcy filing from that period.

Rich Global LLC filed in 2012

Vanity Fair reports that Rich Global LLC, which sold seminars based on the book, declared bankruptcy in 2012 after a judge awarded $24 million in damages to a former business partner. That filing concerned the company; it should not be recast as a personal bankruptcy filing by Kiyosaki or conflated with Rich Dad’s account of his earlier business difficulties.

Did Rich Dad Poor Dad make Kiyosaki a multimillionaire?

The sources establish a commercially successful book and a financial-education business, but they do not establish Kiyosaki’s personal net worth or prove that he became a multimillionaire. Vanity Fair reported in 2026 that Kiyosaki had publicly claimed $1.2 billion in debt. That is a reported public claim, not an audited personal balance sheet. Without independently verified information about both assets and liabilities, it cannot establish either his net worth or insolvency.

The best-supported account, then, is a career arc: an early venture that Rich Dad says struggled financially, a self-published book in 1997, and a business and public profile that grew around its financial-education message. A precise claim about his personal wealth goes beyond what these sources show.
