The Deere–UAW strike began on October 14, 2021, after workers rejected a proposed contract, and ended on November 17 when members ratified a six-year agreement. The strike affected more than 10,000 workers at 14 U.S. facilities, according to Deere’s 2021 annual report.

October 30, 2021 The UAW announced a tentative agreement with Deere. Members remained on strike while the union’s bargaining team presented the agreement for review and ratification; the UAW said it would not release the terms until members at all locations had an opportunity to review them. November 2, 2021 Members rejected the tentative agreement: 55% voted no and 45% voted yes, according to the UAW. Picketing continued while the union discussed next steps with Deere. UAW announcement
November 17, 2021 Members ratified a six-year agreement by 61% to 39%, and the strike ended. Deere’s SEC filing confirms that ratification terminated the strike. UAW announcement · Deere & Company SEC filing

What changed between the tentative agreement and the final vote?

The October 30 tentative agreement did not end the walkout: members stayed on strike while the agreement went through ratification, then rejected it on November 2. The union later reported the terms of the six-year agreement approved on November 17. The available announcements do not provide a complete, directly comparable account of every proposal, so the final agreement’s terms should not be treated as a description of the earlier tentative deal.

Terms the UAW reported for the ratified agreement

  • An $8,500 signing bonus.
  • A 20% wage increase over the contract, including a 10% increase in the first year.
  • Restored cost-of-living adjustments and three 3% lump-sum payments.
  • Enhanced retirement options and CIPP performance benefits.
  • Healthcare remained unchanged for the agreement’s term.

These are terms as described by the UAW in its ratification announcement. UAW Vice President and Agricultural Implement Department Director Chuck Browning said the strike and members’ efforts produced what he called a “groundbreaking contract” and a more secure retirement. How long did the strike last, and how many workers were involved?

The strike ran from October 14 through November 17, 2021. Deere’s 2021 annual report says it affected more than 10,000 workers at 14 U.S. facilities. These figures describe the scale reported by Deere; they are not an estimate of the strike’s economic impact.
