That apparent contradiction reflects two different things: Wizards’ strong results and Hasbro’s wider cost and market pressures. The cuts raised a credible risk that dissatisfied staff might take their expertise to rival tabletop publishers, but the reporting available does not establish that a brain drain actually happened.
What happened in the December 2023 layoffs?
On December 11, 2023, Hasbro announced approximately 1,100 additional job reductions worldwide, on top of roughly 800 reductions already taken that year. In its SEC-filed memo, the company said the cuts were part of a previously communicated strategic transformation and explained: “the market headwinds we anticipated have proven to be stronger and more persistent than planned.”
GeekWire reported on December 14 that at least 20 Wizards of the Coast employees and subsidiary employees were affected, while noting that the full impact was not clear. It named Mike Mearls, Amy Dallen, Eytan Bernstein, Larry Frum, and Bree Heiss among people identified in a list compiled by ComicBook.com reporter Christian Hoffer. That was not an official, complete Hasbro roster; the names and minimum count should be understood as reported information, not a company-confirmed tally. (GeekWire’s report.)
Why cut staff at a business that was growing?
The short answer is that strong performance at one business does not prevent its parent company from reducing costs across the organization. Hasbro gave a broad corporate explanation—persistent market headwinds and strategic transformation—but did not publicly explain why particular Wizards roles were selected.

Wizards and gaming were growing in 2023
Hasbro’s 2023 results showed Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment revenue up 10% for the year. Its broader gaming portfolio generated $2,074.4 million in revenue, an increase of 4%. GeekWire also cited 40% growth in Gaming revenue in the third quarter of 2023. These figures refer to different reporting periods and measures; the Q3 figure is not a full-year growth rate. Hasbro faced company-wide pressure
Hasbro’s total revenue declined 15% in 2023. The company reported a $1,912 million operating loss, which included a large non-cash impairment associated with its eOne Film and TV business and Family Brands. That accounting charge is not evidence that Wizards itself was operating at a loss. The 10-K also listed pressures on gaming-segment operating profit, including tabletop product costs, higher inventory obsolescence charges, royalties, product development, and administrative expenses that included costs to attract and retain talent.

Those company-wide figures help explain why Hasbro might pursue cuts despite growth in gaming; they do not establish that the gaming business was failing, or reveal how management weighed specific jobs. The company’s stated rationale and GeekWire’s criticism are distinct: Hasbro cited persistent market conditions and transformation, while the article questioned the wisdom of cutting staff at a growing business.
Could the layoffs cause a brain drain?
They could create a retention risk, but the cited reporting does not document a wave of departures to competitors. GeekWire’s concern was that layoffs can damage morale and lead talented employees—whether laid off or still employed—to seek work elsewhere. Its examples included Paizo and Kobold Press, independent publishers in the Washington region. The article did not report that the named affected employees joined either company, and the available figures do not quantify any resulting talent loss.

Paizo is a plausible competitor in the tabletop role-playing market: it publishes Pathfinder and led an industry coalition that created the Open RPG Creative License (ORC), finalized in June 2023. Pathfinder gained visibility after Wizards’ Open Game License controversy. That context helps explain why another publisher might appeal to some workers or players; it does not prove that any particular former Wizards employee moved there. (Paizo’s ORC License page.)

Hasbro’s 2024 annual report recorded Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming operating profit of $632.0 million, up $106.3 million from $525.7 million in 2023. This later result indicates the segment remained financially strong by that measure. It does not explain the selection of roles in December 2023, establish how those cuts affected performance, or show where former employees went. (Hasbro’s 2024 annual report.)
