Tipping at All-Inclusive Resorts: What Not to Do—and What to Do Instead

All-inclusive resorts handle gratuities differently. Check the property’s rules first, then treat any extra-tip suggestions as optional examples—not a required rate.

All-inclusive does not mean the same thing at every resort: gratuities may be included, extra tips may be welcome, or tipping may be restricted. Check your specific property’s current policy before you travel. If tips are permitted, any extra amount is optional—not a universal rate or obligation.

Check the resort’s tipping policy before you decide

Look at the official FAQ for the exact property or contact the resort directly. “Gratuities included” tells you something about what the package covers, but it does not by itself establish whether you may give additional tips. Ask three practical questions:

  • Are gratuities included in the package or bill?
  • Are individual extra tips accepted?
  • Are there exceptions for particular roles, such as spa therapists or butlers?

The difference is visible in resorts’ own wording. Jewel Grande’s FAQ says its included service fee is distributed among associates and guests may personally tip for exceptional service. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana’s FAQ says tips and gratuities are included, while additional gratuities are welcome when service exceeds expectations. These are property-specific policies, not rules for every resort.

There are also reported restrictions. Travel + Leisure reported in 2025 that Sandals and Beaches prohibit tipping except for spa therapists and personal butlers. Because policies can change and acceptance may depend on the property and role, confirm the current rule with the resort before offering a tip. Travel + Leisure warns that staff at some resorts may face discipline for accepting prohibited tips.

What not to do

  • Do not assume one resort’s policy applies elsewhere. A rule at one property does not establish the policy at another resort, even within the same destination or brand.
  • Do not infer permission—or a requirement—from “gratuities included.” Read the rest of the policy or ask the property whether additional tips are accepted.
  • Do not push a tip on someone who cannot accept it. Follow the resort’s stated rules and respect a refusal.
  • Do not treat published dollar suggestions as a standard. Recommendations differ, and they are not a required rate.

If tipping is allowed, choose an amount that fits your budget

There is no universal role-by-role tariff established by the cited sources. The following figures are examples from named publishers and interviewees—not requirements, verified property policies, or destination-wide customs.

Travel + Leisure’s 2025 examples

Travel + Leisure reported that Arturo Kralj, marketing manager at SLS Playa Mujeres, suggested budgeting $30–$50 a day for guests who plan to tip. His reported examples were:

Travel + Leisure calculated $150–$250 over five days from those suggestions. Kralj’s figures are reported recommendations; they do not establish what you must tip or what a particular resort permits. The article also reports Evatt Bloomfield, general manager of Sunset at the Palms, estimating that around 90 percent of guests tip. That is his estimate, not a methodologically described industry-wide statistic.

AMA Travel’s older guidance

AMA Travel’s guide, which search-result timing places around 2019, suggests that a couple budget about $150 total for a one-week stay. It gives these examples:

This is older guidance from one travel company, not a current universal practice. The differences between AMA Travel’s and Kralj’s suggestions are a reason to treat such numbers as optional reference points rather than a fixed schedule.

Use a property-specific figure only for that property

Jewel Grande’s FAQ gives a butler guideline of 5% of the room rate while saying the amount is discretionary. That is one resort’s guidance; do not apply it as a general butler-tipping rule.

Know what “included” covers—and what it may not

Packages can distinguish between included resort gratuities and separately paid services. Hard Rock Hotel Cancun’s FAQ lists gratuities among its all-inclusive inclusions while listing spa treatments, optional tours, and transportation separately. That supports checking how a property treats paid add-ons; it does not establish the tipping rules for every resort or every off-property service.

Travel + Leisure reported that Curtain Bluff included a 10% gratuity in the final bill and described an option to contribute more to a staff service-charge pool. The article quotes managing director Rob Sherman, but the report does not establish that this remains the resort’s current policy. Check directly with the property before relying on it.

Prepare cash only if you plan to tip

If the resort permits extra tips and you want to give them, Travel + Leisure suggests carrying small bills in U.S. dollars or local currency. A small pouch can keep tip money together, but neither cash nor a pouch is necessary if you do not plan to tip or the property does not allow it. Choose amounts based on your budget and the service you received.

A simple decision path

  1. Before booking or departure: Read the official FAQ for your exact property or contact it. Confirm what gratuities are included, whether additional tips are accepted, and whether any roles are exceptions.
  2. At the resort: Follow the property’s current policy. If it is unclear, ask staff or management rather than assuming.
  3. If extra tipping is allowed: Decide whether you want to tip and choose an amount you can afford. Published suggestions can provide context, but they are not a bill you owe.
  4. If tipping is prohibited or declined: Do not press the issue. Respect the rule and the employee’s response.
