Macquarie Bank has ended cash and cheque services at its three service locations and at NAB branches, and it no longer accepts cash or cheque deposits into Macquarie accounts. But “going cashless” does not mean customers can no longer get physical cash: Macquarie says debit-card withdrawals remain available at ATMs and participating retailers.
What Macquarie has changed
Macquarie says it previously offered limited cash and cheque services at three locations, despite not operating a traditional branch network. It has ended those services at its locations and at NAB branches. It has also ended cheque services across its banking products. Macquarie’s service guidance describes the changes and alternatives.
The bank says the services at its three locations were used by less than 0.1% of its customers. That is Macquarie’s own figure, not an independently verified measure.
Can Macquarie customers still withdraw cash?
Yes. Macquarie says customers can use a Macquarie debit card to withdraw cash at more than 24,000 ATMs around Australia and more than 3,000 participating retail outlets. The bank lists Woolworths, Big W, BP, Caltex and participating IGA stores among the retailers. These are Macquarie’s stated availability counts and examples; access may depend on the location and retailer.

Macquarie says it reimburses fees charged for domestic ATM withdrawals made with a Macquarie debit card. Check the bank’s debit-card guidance for current terms.
Can you deposit cash or a cheque into a Macquarie account?
No. Macquarie says it no longer accepts cash or cheque deposits into its accounts. If you need to deposit a cheque, you will need to use an account with another bank. A Macquarie-issued bank cheque can be deposited at another financial institution or cancelled so the funds can be paid electronically, according to Macquarie’s guidance.

What to do if someone pays you by cheque
If you receive payments by cheque, contact the payer or registry and ask them to pay you electronically instead. Macquarie advises customers to update their payment details with third parties that send them cheque payments. The change affects how Macquarie handles those payments; it does not itself change the payer’s arrangements.

The more precise distinction is between getting cash and putting cash into a Macquarie account: the bank says debit-card withdrawals continue at ATMs and participating retailers, while counter services and cash deposits into Macquarie accounts have ended.
