He was also uneasy about building family income around work produced by a very young child. In a June 2018 profile, GeekWire traced how that family-media story overlapped with Crosby’s path to co-founding smart-home startup Wyze.
How Claire Crosby’s singing video took off
Crosby was a musician before moving into business. After returning to business school and earning an MBA, he moved to Seattle in 2015 for a job on Amazon’s musical instruments team, according to GeekWire’s June 9, 2018 profile.
At the time, he noticed his daughter Claire singing and recorded her performing “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. Crosby said he posted the video to share with friends and family. It went viral, and the family’s YouTube channel launched in January 2016.
GeekWire reported in June 2018 that Claire was five and had more than one million YouTube subscribers and two million Facebook followers. Videos on the channel had accumulated 200 million views; the “Part of Your World” video had 16 million views, while Dave and Claire’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” video had 20 million. These are figures reported at the time by the news profile, not independently audited or current counts.

Why Dave Crosby left Amazon
The growing demands of filming and travel collided with Crosby’s Amazon job. “It was getting to the point where I felt like I couldn’t do my job at Amazon,” he told GeekWire. “I couldn’t work in a corporate environment with everything that was happening.”
The decision was not simply a matter of choosing a more lucrative online career. Crosby said he felt uneasy about relying on a young child’s work to support the family: “It felt so wrong because it was so based on my 3-year-old. It was like, ‘What kind of dude wants to make a living off his 3-year-old and just bank on her to feed the family?’” The age in that quote reflects the period when he was describing the video’s early success; the profile identified Claire as five in 2018.

How Amazon experience fed into Wyze
Crosby’s next chapter was not only about online video. GeekWire reported that he co-founded Wyze, a Kirkland-area startup selling smart-home products. The profile connected his idea for the business to what he had seen at Amazon: lower-priced, lesser-known brands competing with established names. The reported arc is a collision of work, parenting, and a new business: a musician-turned-Amazon employee posted a family video, his daughter’s singing found a large audience, and the resulting filming and travel made his job difficult to sustain. Crosby’s discomfort with relying financially on his young daughter’s work also complicates any simple story of viral fame as an uncomplicated career opportunity.
