To avoid that complexity, the airline startup chose Breeze instead. Neeleman later said the name grew on the team and fit the simple, “breezy and easy” feeling they wanted for the brand.
Was Breeze Airways originally called Moxy?
Yes. Moxy was the placeholder name for Neeleman’s airline startup. On February 7, 2020, the company announced that it would be called Breeze Airways. Its initial pitch was to offer low-fare nonstop flights between mid-sized U.S. city pairs that lacked nonstop service, with the aim of saving travelers time. The announcement, republished by AVIATOR, set out both the new name and that early plan.
Why did Moxy become Breeze?
Neeleman gave a practical reason: Marriott already had a Moxy hotel brand, and he did not think the company was necessarily in favor of the airline using the same name. “So to avoid anything complex, we just went with the new name,” he said in a contemporaneous interview with The Points Guy.
That account supports saying the hotel brand was a complication behind the switch. It does not establish that Marriott sued, that a court decided the matter, or that a formal trademark dispute took place.

What did the name Breeze mean?
In a later interview, Neeleman recalled that Breeze was “kind of just a name that was hanging out there” and gradually grew on the team. He said they had looked at hundreds of names, but the account does not identify a formal contest or a set of finalist names. He also said he had liked Moxy for a long time and had considered it for JetBlue. In the FINIEN interview, he described the intended feeling: “We wanted things just to be breezy and easy, and just very, very simple.”
Neeleman said the company saw itself as a technology company that happens to fly airplanes. That is an explanation of the brand’s intended identity, not independent proof of how customers experience the airline.

How did the name fit Breeze’s early airline plan?
The 2020 name announcement presented Breeze as a startup focused on connecting mid-sized U.S. cities with low-fare nonstop flights where no nonstop service existed. In a February 2020 report, Neeleman said the company was considering “some 500 routes.” Condé Nast Traveler reported that figure as an early planning statement; it should not be read as Breeze’s current route count.
Neeleman also put the naming choice in perspective: “The name doesn’t make you, you make the name,” adding, “We’ll make it something special.” The shift from Moxy to Breeze was therefore a practical naming decision paired with an intended tone: straightforward and easygoing.
