What Funko announced in 2023
Funko’s inventory had reached $246.4 million at the end of 2022, 48% higher than a year earlier. In a March 1, 2023 financial release, the company said it planned to eliminate excess inventory in the first half of 2023 to bring stock in line with distribution-center capacity and reduce fulfillment costs. What the $30.3 million figure means
Funko later reported a $30.3 million inventory write-down for the quarter ended March 31, 2023. In its 2023 Form 10-K, filed in 2024, Funko said the estimate included product costs, associated capitalized freight, allocated reserves and estimated physical destruction costs. That amount is an accounting valuation of inventory-related costs; it does not tell readers how many products were involved or what those products would have sold for at retail. Physical destruction was completed
The Form 10-K says Funko completed its physical destruction plan during the third quarter of 2023. That confirms the company destroyed inventory as part of the plan, rather than merely announcing an intention to do so.

The landfill claim is not confirmed
The filing does not identify where the inventory was destroyed or specify a landfill as the disposal site. It also does not give a product-level breakdown showing that every item was a Funko Pop! figure. News headlines described the plan as trashing Funko Pop products, but Funko’s reported figures concern inventory more broadly. CBS News’ March 2023 coverage used that stronger framing; the company’s later filing confirms physical destruction but not the destination.
Why Funko said it was reducing inventory
Funko connected the move to excess stock relative to its warehouse capacity. In its August 2023 second-quarter financial release, CFO and COO Steve Nave said the disposal had helped the company process customer orders more quickly and eliminate some storage costs and container rental charges. How this fits Funko’s broader 2023 inventory picture
Funko reported $119 million in inventory at December 31, 2023, compared with $246 million at the end of 2022. It also reported $39.0 million in non-recurring gross-profit charges related to disposal of excess inventory and finished and unfinished goods at offshore factories.
