Emery and Evan Huang are real brothers whose fictionalized counterparts appeared in Fresh Off the Boat. In October 2018, TechCrunch reported that they had launched Batu Capital, an investment office focused on startups in cannabis, blockchain and crypto, and big data. The report describes Batu’s launch-era strategy and investments; it does not establish whether the firm is active today.
Who are Emery and Evan Huang?
Emery and Evan Huang are brothers. Their brother, Eddie Huang, wrote the memoir that inspired the television series Fresh Off the Boat; the show’s Emery and Evan are fictionalized counterparts of the real brothers. TechCrunch’s October 12, 2018 report identified Emery and Evan as the founders of Batu Capital.
What was Batu Capital?
At launch, Batu was described as a multi-family investment office: it raised capital from a network of limited partners for each investment, rather than investing solely as a single-family office. The brothers said the firm had launched in 2018.
Its stated interest was in startup infrastructure for three areas:
#1 Best Overall
- Cannabis: businesses and services supporting the cannabis industry.
- Blockchain and crypto: companies using blockchain technology or operating in digital currencies.
- Big data: businesses built around data-related technology and services.
These are the firm’s reported launch-era interests, not confirmation of its present-day strategy.
What did Batu Capital invest in?
The 2018 TechCrunch article named three portfolio companies. They should be understood as companies Batu was reported to have invested in at that time, not as a verified current portfolio.
Rank #2
| Company | Description in the 2018 report |
|---|---|
| MJ Freeway | Enterprise software for cannabis businesses |
| Vidy | A blockchain-based approach to online video advertising |
| Sora Ventures | A crypto-backed blockchain and digital-currency venture fund |
What stages and check sizes did Batu report?
TechCrunch reported that Batu was considering investments at two ends of the company lifecycle: seed or Series A, as well as Series C or pre-IPO. The firm described a typical check as about $500,000 to $2 million. Those figures and stage preferences were reported in 2018 and are not verified current investment terms.
Where did the brothers plan to invest?
The brothers described an interest in geographic diversification across the United States, China, and Southeast Asia, including the Philippines and Cambodia. The article said Emery was based in Shanghai and Evan planned to move to Beijing at the time. Those locations are historical details from the 2018 report, not a statement about where either brother lives now.

What was the brothers’ approach to choosing startups?
Emery Huang told TechCrunch that Batu prioritized a startup’s executive team, including relevant experience, a track record in the industry or related industries, and a competitive edge. He also spoke about his family’s history of making and losing fortunes over generations, framing the firm’s work as an effort to preserve wealth. These comments explain the founders’ stated thinking at launch; they do not establish how Batu evaluated every investment.

The available account establishes what Batu said and did around its 2018 launch, but it does not confirm the firm’s current operating status or portfolio. Without more recent reliable information, it would be inaccurate either to describe Batu as currently active or to say that it has closed.
