Taylor & Hart gives the imagined necklace two different values, £254 million in its text and £245 million in its table. The real necklace used on screen was fake; a separate sapphire-and-diamond necklace inspired by the design reportedly sold for about $2.2 million in 1998.
What does “most expensive” mean for movie jewelry?
There is no single reliable ranking of the most expensive jewelry used in films unless “expensive” is defined. A fictional jewel can be assigned an imagined value based on its supposed stones and materials. That is different from the prop’s production cost, an appraisal of a real surviving item, or a price actually paid at auction.
The figures below keep those categories separate. Taylor & Hart’s ranking estimates the value of fictional or on-screen pieces; it is not a list of audited prop budgets or realized sales. The page’s publication date is not stated in its metadata, and the figures were reviewed in 2026.
The highest-ranked movie jewelry estimates
These are Taylor & Hart’s estimates for imagined or on-screen items, not verified market prices. The source’s Heart of the Ocean figures conflict, so both are shown rather than treating either as definitive.

- Exquisitely sculpted by internationally known sculptor John Perry, they are molded in beautiful, semi translucent Pellucida, his proprietary resin compound that resembles porcelain, but unlike porcelain will not break if dropped.
- These are exactly the same size as those in the movie, 3 inches in wingspan and 2 inches from beak to tail
- Direct pricing; these come from the artist's California studio here in the USA, so direct pricing with no middle man and no import tax.
- The CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICATION includes an excerpt from the contract between 20th Century Fox and John that, in consideration for the creation of the Doves and the other 12 Days of Christmas ornaments, allowed him to retain the copyrights and continue to produce replicas.
- They are as light as a feather so can be hung from the smallest of branches. They look delicate, but they are in fact sturdy and will survive dropping on the floor and similar abuse.
| Film and item | Attributed figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Titanic — Heart of the Ocean | £254,000,000 in Taylor & Hart’s explanatory text; £245,000,000 in its table | Conflicting estimates of the fictional necklace’s value; neither is a documented sale or prop cost. |
| Gentlemen Prefer Blondes — Loralei’s layered necklace | £895,732 | Taylor & Hart’s estimated fictional-jewel value, not a sale. |
| Pretty Woman — Vivian’s necklace | £178,000 | Taylor & Hart’s estimated fictional-jewel value, not a sale. |
| Marvel films — Infinity Gauntlet | £17,490,000 | Taylor & Hart’s estimate for the imagined gems and metal. The gauntlet is not a conventional jewelry piece. |
Taylor & Hart’s movie-jewelry ranking describes the Heart of the Ocean as having an imagined 25.52-carat, heart-shaped blue fancy diamond, inspired by the Hope Diamond. That description helps explain the ranking’s hypothetical valuation; it does not establish that such a diamond or necklace existed.
Was the Heart of the Ocean real?
Not as a giant real sapphire-and-diamond necklace worn by Kate Winslet during filming. A 1998 Los Angeles Times report says the necklace Winslet wore was fake and discusses licensed J. Peterman consumer replicas. The same report distinguishes those from a separate, real sapphire-and-diamond necklace modeled on the film design.

That separate necklace, described as a 170-carat sapphire-and-diamond piece, reportedly sold at auction for about $2.2 million in March 1998 and was worn by Céline Dion at the Oscars. The approximate amount is the newspaper’s report of a historical sale; it is not the value or sale price of the screen prop.
The Los Angeles Times account also places the film’s look in the context of licensed replicas. A replica inspired by a movie design should not be mistaken for the original object used in production.

What did a Titanic necklace actually sell for?
Heritage Auctions records a Fox Studio-authorized J. Peterman recreation of the Heart of the Ocean selling for $2,880 on June 26, 2017. The auction description identifies faux diamonds, a faux 74-carat blue pendant and a 20th Century Fox certificate of authenticity. This was a documented sale of an authorized recreation—not the original screen-used necklace and not the separate 170-carat sapphire-and-diamond piece reported in 1998.
Heritage Auctions’ sale record is useful precisely because it identifies what was sold. Its price should not be compared directly with Taylor & Hart’s fictional valuation: one is an auction result for a recreation, while the other is an estimate for an imagined jewel.

How to compare movie-jewelry prices
Before treating a headline figure as a price, identify what kind of evidence it represents:
- Fictional estimate: an imagined value assigned to a jewel in a story or ranking. Taylor & Hart’s amounts fall into this category.
- Prop or production cost: what a production spent to make or acquire the item. The figures cited here do not establish the production cost of the Titanic prop.
- Appraisal: a professional valuation of a specific real object. The cited estimates are not appraisals of the film prop.
- Realized sale: an amount reported as paid in a transaction, such as Heritage’s $2,880 sale of the authorized recreation or the 1998 report of about $2.2 million for the separate inspired necklace.
These distinctions matter because a dramatic fictional estimate does not prove that a production owned a jewel of that value, and an auction price for a replica does not establish the value of the original prop. The cited sources do not provide a consistent, authoritative ranking of original film-used jewelry by documented production cost or sale price.

Why the ruby slippers are a different record
Heritage Auctions reported that the Wizard of Oz ruby slippers sold for $32.5 million including buyer’s premium in 2024. That is a movie-memorabilia auction result for shoes, not a jewelry sale, and it cannot be used to rank movie jewelry. It does illustrate why category and transaction type need to accompany any “most expensive” claim.
Heritage Auctions’ report on the slippers sale concerns a different kind of collectible and a realized auction price—not an estimate of a fictional jewel.
