Alaska Air Group is reorganizing flight schedules around coordinated arrival and departure banks so more passengers can connect across its Alaska and Hawaiian networks. The company’s December 2024 plan focused on rebanking Seattle and Portland; its September 2026 strategy update describes a broader push to expand global connectivity and network reach. The connection gains cited by Alaska are company estimates, not independently verified results.
What hub-based operations mean
For Alaska Air Group, “rebanking” means grouping arrivals and departures into coordinated time windows. A flight bank is designed to bring passengers from one set of routes into an airport in time to connect to another set. The approach is different from simply adding destinations: it changes when flights operate so that existing routes can connect more effectively.

In its December 2024 Investor Day transcript, Alaska described schedule changes intended to create optimized banks at Seattle and Portland. Management said broader connection windows could help the combined network funnel traffic through both airports, with Portland serving as a complementary gateway and helping handle north–south flows and peak periods. Why Alaska says it is changing its network
Connect the Alaska and Hawaiian networks
Alaska described its standalone network as historically concentrated east of its West Coast hubs: management said 53% of capacity was deployed there. With Hawaiian added and Seattle positioned as a global gateway, Alaska said its network had become more centered on its hubs, with capacity balanced to the east and west while retaining a strong north–south network. The strategic aim is to use the combined route map to feed more connecting itineraries.

Hawaiian’s flights are a central part of that rationale. Better timing could give passengers from more of the North American network access to Hawaii departures, while Alaska said improved scheduling could also increase Hawaiian aircraft utilization. Those are management’s expected benefits, not proof that every connection or utilization gain has been achieved.
Make Hawaii flights easier to connect to
Alaska used Portland–Honolulu as an example of the scheduling problem. Those departures had been grouped in the 8 a.m. hour; the 2024 plan spread them across early morning, mid-morning and evening so more flights from the broader network could connect to Hawaii. The plan covered 12 overlapping continental-U.S.-to-Hawaii markets.

Alaska estimated that schedule optimization in those 12 markets would raise its share of North American demand to Hawaii from 70% to 90% and provide access for another 4 million guests annually. These are company estimates associated with the plan, not independently measured passenger outcomes. Alaska Air Group, Investor Day transcript, December 10, 2024
Support Seattle’s international growth
Alaska called Seattle its global gateway and planned to rebank the hub as it expanded international flying. In its 2024 presentation, management said domestic wide-body departures from Seattle would increase from once daily to six times daily. Alaska’s 2026 investor materials set a target of at least 15 long-haul intercontinental destinations by 2030. That is a strategic target, not a current count of routes. Alaska estimated that Seattle rebanking could increase the airport’s total addressable market by 20%, add nearly 6 million connecting passengers per year and bring the total to approximately 36 million. Those figures describe management’s projections associated with schedule changes; they should not be read as realized passenger growth. Alaska Air Group, Investor Day transcript, December 10, 2024
Give Portland a complementary connecting role
Alaska’s plan also called for rebanking Portland. Management said the changes could produce four times as many possible connections, make the airport more relevant beyond the Pacific Northwest, and offer travelers an alternate gateway. In the company’s account, stronger Portland connections could also help leave Seattle more capacity for international connecting traffic and local demand. The fourfold figure is a projection, not a verified count of completed connections.

| Figure | What Alaska reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|

| 70% to 90% | Management’s estimate of Alaska’s share of North American demand to Hawaii after schedule optimization in 12 overlapping continental-U.S.-to-Hawaii markets. | A company estimate tied to a specific set of markets and schedule changes. |

| 20%; nearly 6 million; approximately 36 million | Management’s Seattle projection: 20% more total addressable market, nearly 6 million more connecting passengers per year and approximately 36 million total. | Projections associated with rebanking, not independently verified results. |
| Four times | Alaska’s projected number of possible connections in Portland after rebanking. | A comparison of possible connections in the company’s plan, not a measure of realized passenger traffic. |
| At least 15 by 2030 | Alaska’s target for long-haul intercontinental destinations. | A future strategic target, not a statement that those routes currently operate. |
For operating context, Alaska Air Group’s 2025 Form 10-K reports 47 million revenue passengers in 2025, compared with 39 million in 2024. The filing includes Hawaiian’s results only from September 18 through December 31, 2024, so the years do not represent identical periods of combined-company reporting. The totals also do not establish that rebanking caused passenger growth. Alaska Air Group, 2025 Form 10-K

In a September 29, 2026 strategy announcement, Alaska described the next stage of Alaska Accelerate as moving from integration to activation, with an emphasis on global connectivity and network breadth. CEO Ben Minicucci said, “The acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines did not create a new strategy – it accelerated one we had already built.” The framing positions hub coordination as part of a broader strategy accelerated by the combination, rather than a standalone scheduling project. The same update said the company had captured roughly two-thirds of its $1 billion incremental profit target and expected to reach the full target by 2027. The target includes merger synergies; it is a company-reported progress measure and forecast, not evidence that hub rebanking alone will deliver that amount. Alaska Air Group, “Alaska Air Group enters activation phase of Alaska Accelerate,” September 29, 2026
What travelers should watch for
For a passenger, the value of hub-based scheduling depends on the actual itinerary: flight times, connection duration, route availability and whether a connection works for the traveler’s origin and destination. Alaska’s network projections describe potential reach; they do not guarantee a particular route, convenient connection, fare, or schedule. As the strategy advances, the most concrete evidence for travelers will be published timetables and bookable itineraries, rather than projected connection totals.
