Samsung Electronics’ ticker depends on the exchange and share class: its common shares trade on Korea Exchange (KRX) as 005930, while its London Stock Exchange (LSE) common-share GDR trades as SMSN. The preferred-share equivalents are 005935 on KRX and SMSEL on the LSE. These are different listed instruments, so check the venue and security class before placing an order.
Samsung Electronics tickers by exchange and share class
Samsung Electronics lists its original shares on the Korea Exchange and its global depositary receipts (GDRs) on the London Stock Exchange. The symbols and ISINs below are from Samsung Electronics’ listing information.
| Market | Security | Symbol | ISIN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Korea Exchange (KRX) | Original common share | 005930 | KR7005930003 |
| Korea Exchange (KRX) | Original preferred share | 005935 | KR7005931001 |
| London Stock Exchange (LSE) | Common GDR | SMSN | US7960508882 |
| London Stock Exchange (LSE) | Preferred GDR | SMSEL | US7960502018 |
So, if a broker search returns “Samsung,” confirm that the result is the intended exchange and class. SMSN is an LSE GDR ticker, not a US exchange ticker. An ISIN can help distinguish a particular security when a broker displays a shortened name or more than one listing.
What the different symbols identify
KRX shares: 005930 and 005935
005930 identifies Samsung Electronics’ original common shares on the KRX; 005935 identifies its original preferred shares. The common and preferred classes are distinct securities, not alternative spellings of one ticker.

LSE GDRs: SMSN and SMSEL
SMSN identifies the common-share GDR and SMSEL the preferred-share GDR on the LSE. A GDR is a depositary receipt listed in a market outside the issuer’s home market; it is not the same listing as the original Korean share. The symbols therefore identify the London-listed instruments, even though they relate to Samsung Electronics shares.
Can investors outside South Korea buy them?
Samsung’s investor guide says foreign individuals may invest directly in KRX shares or indirectly through LSE GDRs, subject to the conditions it describes. It says EU residents can trade LSE GDRs like locally listed shares, and that non-EU residents other than US residents face no special limitations for trading those GDRs on European exchanges. Samsung states that US residents are prohibited from trading these LSE GDRs under Rule 144A.
