Elden Ring: Nightreign topped the reported U.S. video game sales chart for May 2025, followed by DOOM: The Dark Ages and Forza Horizon 5. The ranking is based on dollar sales, not copies sold, and some games have gaps in reported digital-platform coverage.
What were the best-selling video games in May 2025?

What the ranking measures—and what it leaves out
The chart ranks dollar sales rather than unit volume, so a higher position does not necessarily mean more copies were sold. Circana’s stated framework for its annual top-20 charts covers physical and full-game digital sales reported by participating publishers and platforms; games included in hardware bundles are excluded. That framework does not guarantee complete market coverage.
The chart flags specific digital-data gaps: Minecraft is missing Nintendo-platform digital sales, while MLB: The Show 25 is missing Xbox and Nintendo-platform digital sales. Those omissions mean the reported positions for these titles do not include all of their digital sales. The monthly ranking and its caveats were reported by GamesBeat on July 9, 2025, attributing the chart to Circana. Windows Central also reproduced the ranking and described its dollar-sales basis and platform-data caveats.

How the chart fits into U.S. game spending
Circana-reported U.S. video game sales totaled $4.052 billion in May 2025, up 1% from May 2024. That broader total is not the combined sales of the 20 ranked games: it includes categories beyond full-game sales.
- Content: $3.726 billion, up 2%. This category includes physical and digital full games, downloadable content and microtransactions, and subscriptions across multiple platforms.
- Hardware: $172 million, down 13% year over year.
- Accessories: $154 million, down 6% year over year.
Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive producer for games reports, said: “May 2025 hardware spending fell 13% compared to a year ago, to $172 million.” He also reported that Nintendo Switch spending fell 44% year over year, PS5 sales grew 3%, and Xbox Series spending declined 30%. PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars; the PS5 Dual Sense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black led accessories in both measures. These figures and remarks were reported by GamesBeat.
