The offer page also displays a 4.6-out-of-5 rating from 323,969 reviews, identified there as from 2025. That promotional rating is not a measure of tax accuracy or whether a particular product fits your return.
Can you file for free with TurboTax?
TurboTax advertises its Free Edition at $0 for federal filing, $0 for state filing, and $0 to file for qualifying simple returns. The product is for a limited set of Form 1040 situations, with specified exceptions for certain credits and Schedule 1-A. Intuit estimates that roughly 37% of taxpayers qualify; that figure is Intuit’s estimate, not an independently verified eligibility rate. A $0 product is likely a better deal than a discount on a paid tier if your return qualifies. But eligibility depends on your full tax situation and the forms you need, not simply whether you want to file online.
Which TurboTax product fits your return?
Intuit identifies itemized deductions, unemployment income, business or 1099-NEC income, stock or crypto sales, and rental income among examples that may fall outside its simple-return criteria. These are examples, not a complete eligibility test; check the forms your situation requires against TurboTax’s current product guidance.

Also compare the workflow you want. TurboTax offers online products and downloadable desktop software. The online offer should not be assumed to apply to desktop purchases. Intuit says its desktop products include federal preparation and up to five federal e-files; state e-file fees may apply. The online product comparison lays out product distinctions.
Does the discount include state filing?
No. The advertised 20% offer applies to federal TurboTax products only, not state products. State preparation or e-filing can therefore add to the total, depending on the product and your filing choices. Do not treat the federal discount as a discount on the entire federal-and-state bill.

Which TurboTax promotions have expired?
Two other promotions shown on Intuit’s pages had deadlines that passed before October 8, 2026: the mobile-app offer required starting by February 28, 2026, and the Expert Full Service offer required filing by March 31, 2026. Those dates do not make the current federal discount permanent; the displayed 20% offer can change or disappear.
