WestJet brought the former Sunwing aircraft into its operations under one Air Operator Certificate (AOC). Sunwing Vacations, the travel-package brand, continued within the WestJet Group. The airline and the vacation business were distinct, so the airline’s end as a separate operator did not mean Sunwing Vacations disappeared.
What happened to Sunwing Airlines?
WestJet acquired Sunwing in May 2023, but the acquisition and the airline integration were separate milestones. The airline integration was completed on May 29, 2025, according to WestJet’s completion announcement. WestJet said the former Sunwing aircraft were brought into its operation under a single AOC, and identified 18 former Sunwing aircraft in its unified narrowbody operation.
WestJet’s May 2025 announcement said cabin reconfigurations to its standard interior were continuing through 2025. That was the company’s stated plan; the announcement does not establish that every aircraft conversion has since been completed.
Is Sunwing Vacations the same as Sunwing Airlines?
No. Sunwing Airlines was the carrier that operated flights; Sunwing Vacations was the tour operator and travel-package brand. WestJet’s 2023 description of its future plan distinguished the airline integration from the continuation of Sunwing Vacations as a separate brand, and its later announcement confirmed the vacation brand continued within the WestJet Group. The airline’s operations were consolidated; the package brand did not disappear.

Sunwing and WestJet integration timeline
- May 2023: WestJet acquired Sunwing.
- September 2023: WestJet described a plan to integrate the airline while retaining Sunwing Vacations as a brand.
- May 28, 2025: WestJet announced the integration’s completion and said the final Sunwing-operated flight had taken place that week.
- May 29, 2025: WestJet identifies this as the date the airline integration was realized.
The dates and aircraft details are WestJet’s account of its own integration; the distinction between the acquisition and the later operational consolidation matters when interpreting what “no longer exists” means.
What conditions accompanied government approval?
Transport Canada approved the acquisition on March 10, 2023, after a public-interest assessment that incorporated the Commissioner of Competition’s findings and consultations. The government announced conditions addressing routes, regional access, baggage handling, jobs, offices, technology and monitoring. They were approval conditions, not proof that each commitment was fulfilled or a guarantee of a particular traveller’s experience. The full announcement is available from Transport Canada.

How this fits into Canadian airline competition
Canada’s airline market has seen repeated entry and exit, and competition can differ substantially by route. The Competition Bureau’s 2025 market study says Air Canada reduced routes between Canada’s 35 largest cities by more than 12% from 2019 to 2023, while WestJet reduced them by 20%. It also reports that Air Canada and WestJet competed on 61% and 77% of their respective routes in 2023, down from 72% and 83% in 2019. These figures describe wider route changes, not an effect caused by Sunwing’s integration. The Bureau notes that competitive gains from new entrants can be fragile, particularly during economic shocks. See the Competition Bureau’s airline market study.
The Bureau’s timeline records WestJet’s 1996 entry, Swoop’s 2018 entry and 2023 fold-back into WestJet, and the entry of Lynx Air and Canada Jetlines in 2022 followed by their exits in 2024. WestJet said Swoop’s operations folded into its 737 operation in 2023; that is a useful parallel, but the available information does not establish that the two airline transitions had identical effects on customers or employees.
