How Indian Army Spouses Are Building Careers Around Frequent Postings

Frequent postings can disrupt conventional careers. Profiles of Indian military spouses show varied ways some have built portable work, alongside trade-offs around time, income uncertainty and privacy.

Frequent moves, remote postings and periods of managing a household alone can make a conventional career difficult for Indian military spouses. Profiles published in 2016 and 2025 show several ways some “fauji wives” have adapted: online services, training, teaching, creative businesses and social-media work. These individual stories illustrate options, not how common any one path is.

Why conventional career paths can be hard to sustain

Chandana Banerjee’s 2016 Scroll.in feature describes repeated relocations, remote postings and long stretches of solo household management as obstacles to maintaining a job tied to one place. A role that depends on local clients, an office or a predictable schedule may be difficult to carry from one posting to another.

Service-community expectations can also compete with work time. In a 2025 ThePrint report, an unnamed Army wife described choosing a long-distance marriage as one way to pursue a full corporate career, saying that accompanying a spouse could involve parties, welfare events and other expectations. That is her account, not a rule for all military families.

Career paths that appeared in the 2016 profiles

Banerjee’s feature presented varied approaches to earning and working across postings. They are examples of individual decisions, not evidence that these careers are typical or equally accessible.

  • Online psychological services: Clinical psychologist Prachi S Vaish began an online service after frequent moves made an in-person clinic impractical.
  • Remote corporate training: Payal Talwar and Priyanka Kumar’s WINGS group used remote meetings and work produced by women posted across India.
  • Craft and decor: Bandita Bose ran Unchainedreamz, a bespoke decoupage and decor business. The article reported prices of Rs 250–1,600 per item and production of about 13–15 pieces a month in 2016; these are historical, article-reported figures, not current prices or earnings.
  • Art and dance instruction: Artist Monishikha RoyChowdhury taught children and prepared exhibitions, while Maria Duckworth taught dance at defence institutes.
  • Jewellery entrepreneurship: Prerna Singh built the jewellery brand Just Prerna.

What digital platforms add—and what they do not solve

A newer route in ThePrint’s 2025 report is using social platforms to find audiences, clients or brand collaborations. Its profiles include nutritionist and wellness entrepreneur Garima Mehta, YouTube creator Amrita Solanki, creator Karuna Choudhary, sari-business owner Sonali Singh Rawat Rana, and soft-skills trainer Bratati Dey, founder of Soul Coach.

ThePrint reported that Solanki began filming with a smartphone. At the time of that report, her YouTube channel had more than 42,000 followers, and a 2023 reel about a government house and settling in had 2.9 million views. Those figures describe reported reach at particular points in time; they are not evidence of income, ongoing growth or typical results. The same report said Mehta’s page had more than 32,000 followers at the time of publication, and that Rana’s sari business produced 25–30 pieces a month. It also reported that Dey had delivered more than 300 live workshops. These are report-specific figures, not audited measures of profitability.

Digital work can make some services or content less dependent on a local workplace, but it still takes time, connectivity and suitable skills. Businesses involving physical products also have production and inventory demands. Platform reach may help creators connect with audiences, but follower counts and views do not guarantee customers or stable earnings.

Trade-offs to consider when choosing a portable career

The profiles suggest practical questions rather than a proven ranking of careers. The available reporting does not compare earnings or success rates.

Career route Portability and practical considerations
Online services or remote training Can reduce reliance on a local workplace; depends on reliable connectivity, digital skills and a way to reach clients.
Teaching or instruction May transfer between locations, but in-person classes rely on local demand and available venues; online delivery still requires suitable technology and scheduling.
Craft, jewellery or sari business Can be run across moves in some circumstances, but making, storing and shipping products require time and may involve inventory and startup costs.
Content creation and brand collaborations Can reach audiences beyond one posting, but visibility is platform-dependent and does not assure predictable income. ThePrint also described creators curating posts with security guidance in mind.
Fixed-location corporate employment May offer a steadier workplace and career continuity, but can conflict with frequent moves; one spouse quoted by ThePrint said some choose to live apart to preserve this kind of work.

Support and privacy matter alongside the business idea

ThePrint reported that the Army wives’ organisation AWWA offers digital-skills courses and a website where Army wives can list services such as tutoring and dance or drama classes. Such offerings may help with skills or visibility, but the report does not establish that they are available in every location or guarantee work.

Social-media work also creates a privacy and security consideration. ThePrint said creators curate what they post in light of security guidelines. A spouse considering public content can weigh audience-building against the family’s preferences about identifying details, location and routines.

What the profiles can—and cannot—tell readers

The 2016 Scroll.in feature and ThePrint’s 2025 report are journalistic profiles. Together, they show that some spouses have pursued flexible or portable work while navigating transfers, family demands and service-community expectations. They do not provide a representative employment rate, a causal estimate of how postings affect careers, or a head-to-head measure of which business model works best.

That distinction matters for personal-finance decisions: a profile can suggest an approach to investigate, but it cannot establish expected revenue, costs or job security. Any decision to start a business or change work arrangements depends on the individual household’s resources, schedule and risk tolerance.
