Western Australians can claim up to $150 through the state government’s Treebate program when they buy and plant eligible native trees on private property. It is a capped rebate—not an unconditional cash payment—and your rebate cannot exceed what you spend on qualifying trees.

For program year two, eligible residents aged 18 or older can claim for up to five trees. Check the official Treebate page before buying: the round is scheduled to close at 8:59 am on 2 August 2027, but may close earlier if its 10,000-claim allocation is reached.

How the $150 Treebate works

Treebate reimburses eligible spending on the purchase and planting of qualifying native trees. The rebate is the amount you spent on eligible trees, up to $150 per eligible resident for the program year. Spend less than $150 and you receive less; the cap is not a flat payment.

Year two opened at 9:00 am on 3 August 2026 and is scheduled to run until 8:59 am on 2 August 2027, unless the 10,000-claim allocation is used first. The government lists Treebate as a current ServiceWA offer, but does not state how many claims remain. Confirm availability on the official program page before purchasing.

Who can claim

  • You must be a Western Australian resident aged 18 or older.
  • You may make one claim per eligible resident during the program year, for up to five eligible trees and a maximum $150 rebate.
  • The trees must be planted on private property. If you are not the owner, obtaining written consent from the owner or their agent is your responsibility.
  • You must buy the trees in one transaction from a commercial nursery or retailer located in Western Australia.

Purchases from private classified listings, including Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree, are not accepted. Read the Treebate terms and conditions for the full eligibility rules.

Which trees qualify—and what costs are excluded

For Treebate, a native tree must be indigenous to Australia, have a canopy more than three metres wide at maturity, and not be identified as a weed or declared pest under the cited Western Australian biosecurity law. A plant being described as native by a seller does not, by itself, establish that it meets every program requirement.

How to claim the rebate

  1. Check availability and choose trees. Confirm the round is still accepting claims, then select no more than five trees that qualify and suit your site. Ask a local commercial nursery or retailer to confirm the species and provide clear labels.
  2. Buy them in one transaction. Purchase from a commercial nursery or retailer located in WA. Keep one valid, itemised tax invoice showing the qualifying tree purchases and required purchase information.
  3. Plant the trees before applying. They must be planted on private property. If you do not own the property, get the owner’s or agent’s written consent.
  4. Save proof of the tree names. Take photos of the plant labels. You will need these alongside the invoice.
  5. Submit a claim. You can claim through ServiceWA or use the department’s alternative online or paper claim methods. For an app claim, log in with myID at Standard identity strength. Follow the current ServiceWA Treebate instructions and the department’s Treebate FAQs.

Choose trees that fit your property

A qualifying tree still needs to suit its planting site. Before buying, consider its mature canopy and available space, sunlight and shade, distance from buildings and fences, and the location of underground utilities. Check that the species suits your local climate and ask how much watering it is likely to need after establishment. Its value as habitat or food for local wildlife may also help guide your choice.

The government’s Treebate planting guide offers planting advice. For a particular species and site, ask a local nursery rather than assuming one tree is suitable across every part of WA.

What the program figures do—and do not—show

The WA Government says the first program year supported planting more than 10,000 trees in WA yards. For year two, the government announced 10,000 additional rebates, and the terms set a maximum allocation of 10,000 claims. These are government-reported program figures; they are not an independent measurement of canopy growth or environmental impact.
