The Elusive Trillionaire: Is Elon Musk Still the World’s Richest Person?

Forbes’s October 8, 2026 live ranking estimated Elon Musk’s fortune at $1.01 trillion—but billionaire rankings are dated estimates, not cash balances.

Yes—on Forbes’s live ranking at 11:05 a.m. EDT on October 8, 2026, Elon Musk was estimated to be worth $1.01 trillion, making him the world’s richest person and the first-ranked individual above the trillion-dollar mark. Jeff Bezos was second at an estimated $377.6 billion. Those figures are estimates tied to a specific time, not audited totals or cash balances.

Who is the world’s richest person right now?

Forbes’s Real-Time Billionaires ranking put Musk first at $1.01 trillion in its October 8, 2026 update, timestamped 11:05 a.m. EDT. The same update put Bezos second at $377.6 billion. Forbes said Musk’s estimated wealth was down $17.6 billion from the previous trading day, illustrating that a person can remain above the trillion-dollar line while their estimate moves sharply.

“World’s richest” is therefore best read as a dated ranking, not a permanent title. A precise statement names the publisher and the date and time of its estimate.

What does a trillion-dollar net worth mean?

Net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities. For a billionaire whose fortune is concentrated in company ownership, the estimate can be driven by the value assigned to shares and other holdings, rather than by money readily available to spend. A ranking is not a bank statement, an audited personal balance sheet, or a measure of cash on hand.

Publicly traded shares have observable market prices, but a large stake is not necessarily equivalent to cash at that price: selling can affect the market, and holdings may have restrictions. Private-company stakes require valuation estimates because they do not trade continuously on a public exchange. Debt, taxes, liquidity and the ranking’s assumptions about ownership can also affect the result.

Why can the trillionaire label change?

Musk’s estimates crossed the trillion-dollar threshold more than once in 2026 as company valuations and the treatment of assets changed. Forbes reported an estimate of $1.1 trillion on June 12 after a SpaceX public listing, attributing the rise to the listing and describing Musk’s SpaceX holdings and options as a 38% stake. On June 25, Forbes reported $962 billion after a SpaceX share-price decline and the exclusion of $116 billion in restricted Tesla shares from its calculation.

By Forbes’s October 8 live update, the estimate was back above the threshold at $1.01 trillion. These are snapshots from different dates and calculation circumstances, not simultaneous measurements. The underlying valuations and what a ranking counts can shift enough to move an estimate across a round-number cutoff.

Why do Forbes and Bloomberg estimates differ?

Forbes and Bloomberg both publish estimates, but they describe different update schedules and valuation choices. Their figures should be compared only with the publisher, date and methodology attached.

Comparison Forbes Bloomberg
Update schedule Its live ranking says public holdings update every five minutes while markets are open, with stock prices delayed 15 minutes. Fortunes substantially tied to private companies are updated once daily. Forbes methodology The index is a daily ranking based on market moves, the economy and reporting. Bloomberg methodology
Public holdings Uses public-market holdings and frequent market-hour updates, subject to the stated price delay. Forbes methodology Values public stakes using recent closing prices and converts them to U.S. dollars at current exchange rates. Bloomberg methodology
Private companies Adjusts major private-company estimates using industry- or region-specific market indices when available. Forbes methodology May use comparable public-company multiples or transaction comparisons for closely held companies. Bloomberg methodology
Other calculation factors The methodology describes public and private holdings and their update timing; the cited description does not specify comparable rules for every discount or family-asset treatment. Forbes methodology Discusses liquidity and country-risk discounts, debt treatment, and assumptions where verified ownership information is unavailable. Bloomberg methodology

Differences between rankings do not by themselves show that one is wrong. Public prices, private-company estimates, debt, restricted shares, liquidity discounts and assumptions about ownership can all affect the calculation. A live list and an annual list can also use different dates, so their numbers may not describe the same market moment.

How to interpret the different 2026 Forbes figures

Forbes’s 2026 annual-list edition estimated Musk’s wealth at $839 billion using share prices and exchange rates from March 1, 2026. That figure is a dated annual-list snapshot; it is not a competing estimate for October 8. Forbes’s June and October reports, by contrast, describe estimates at later points in the year, when valuations and holdings treatment had changed.

When a ranking number appears to conflict with another, check these details before drawing a conclusion:

  • Publisher: Forbes and Bloomberg use their own valuation methods.
  • Date and time: A live estimate, daily index and annual-list snapshot may use different market data.
  • Currency: Confirm whether the figure is stated in U.S. dollars and how exchange rates were applied.
  • Holdings counted: Check how the source treats private-company stakes, restricted shares, debt, discounts and ownership uncertainty.
