No—Kobo does not require a monthly fee just to use its reading platform. The recurring charge is for Kobo Plus, an optional subscription to a selection of ebooks, audiobooks, or both. For the United States, Kobo’s plans page, checked October 8, 2026, lists prices from $7.99 per month, with a 14-day trial for eligible new subscribers. Taxes may apply, and billing begins after the trial unless you cancel.
What Kobo’s monthly fee covers
Kobo’s reading platform is not itself a paid monthly membership. You can read using a Kobo eReader, the Kobo Books app for iOS or Android, or Kobo Web Reader without subscribing to Kobo Plus. A Kobo eReader is optional; it is not required to use the app or browser reader.
Kobo Plus is a separate, voluntary subscription that provides access to eligible titles while your subscription is active. It is available in select countries, so availability, prices, trial terms, and taxes depend on where you subscribe. Kobo’s US plans page advertises more than 1.5 million ebooks and more than 150,000 audiobooks; these are Kobo’s catalogue figures, not an independent count, and may change.
