United’s MileagePlus changes give eligible United cardholders higher mileage earning on United flights, discounts on award tickets and expanded access to some Polaris Business Saver Awards. In exchange, non-cardholders earn fewer miles on United flights, and general members without a United card no longer earn miles on Basic Economy tickets. The revised earning rates apply to tickets purchased on or after April 2, 2026—not to flights taken from that date.
What United changed in MileagePlus
United announced the changes on February 19, 2026. The program now ties more of its earning and redemption benefits to holding an eligible United credit or debit card. On eligible United flights, primary cardholders can earn up to twice as many miles per dollar from United as non-cardholders. Paying for a ticket with an eligible United card can earn additional miles; the exact amount depends on the card and the member’s status. United’s announcement describes the benefit as applying to eligible cards and flights.
The earning-rate change is based on when a ticket is purchased: it applies to tickets bought on or after April 2, 2026. It is not a travel-date cutoff. United and Reuters also say members without a United card earn fewer miles on United flights under the revised rules, but the available announcement does not establish one universal reduction for every non-cardholder.
How the changes affect different travelers
| Traveler or transaction | What the announced rules mean |
|---|---|
| Primary holder of an eligible United card | Can earn up to twice as many miles per dollar from United on eligible United flights as a non-cardholder, plus additional miles when paying with an eligible United card. Actual earning depends on card and status. |
| Premier member with an eligible United card | Receives the cardholder benefits and at least 15% off United award tickets under the announcement. |
| General MileagePlus member with an eligible United card | Receives at least 10% off United award tickets and expanded access to some Polaris Business Saver Award inventory. |
| Member without a United card | Earns fewer miles on United flights than under the cardholder rates. General members without a card do not earn miles on Basic Economy tickets under the new rule. |
| Ticket purchased before April 2, 2026 | The announced revised earning rates do not apply based on the stated purchase-date threshold. |
Basic Economy is the sharpest difference for non-cardholders
Under the new rule, a general MileagePlus member needs a United card to earn miles on Basic Economy tickets. This is distinct from earning fewer miles on other United flights: the Basic Economy rule means a general member without a card earns no miles on those tickets. The announcement does not support treating every non-cardholder’s mileage reduction as the same amount.

Before booking, check the fare type, whether the traveler is a primary holder of an eligible card, whether the ticket will be paid with that card, and when the ticket is purchased. Card and status eligibility matter; merely having a MileagePlus account is not the same as holding an eligible United card.
What the award-ticket discount means
United announced a discount of at least 10% on United award tickets for eligible cardholders, rising to at least 15% for Premier members who hold a United card. These are discounts on award prices, not a promise that every award will cost a fixed number of miles. Prices and eligible inventory can vary.

United’s examples illustrate the percentages, but should not be read as standard prices:
- A 15,000-mile Economy award example becomes 13,500 miles for a primary cardholder without Premier status.
- A 200,000-mile Polaris award example becomes 170,000 miles for a primary cardholder with Premier status.
United also described Polaris Business Saver Awards as pricing as low as 80,000 miles before the cardholder discount, or as low as 72,000 miles for cardholders without Premier status and 68,000 miles for cardholders with Premier status. These are “as low as” examples, not guaranteed prices; award availability and pricing vary.

Expanded Polaris Saver access is not a seat guarantee
Eligible cardholders who are general MileagePlus members gain expanded access to some Polaris Business Saver Award inventory. United said about one-third of flights with Saver Award fares available had exclusive inventory for cardholders and Premier members. That figure is United’s statement, not an independently audited statistic, and it refers to flights with Saver Award fares available—not all flights.
Expanded access can make more award options visible to eligible members, but it does not guarantee a Saver seat on a particular route or date. Check the award search for the specific itinerary and price before relying on this benefit.

How to judge whether the change is useful to you
The policy favors travelers who already hold an eligible United card, fly United, and can use award discounts or expanded inventory. It may matter particularly to Basic Economy customers who want to earn miles, since general members without a United card do not earn them on those tickets under the new rule.
Whether getting or keeping a card is worthwhile depends on your expected travel and spending, Premier status, award use, the specific card’s current annual fee and terms, and whether you will pay for eligible tickets with that card. The announcement alone does not establish that every MileagePlus member should obtain one. Review the current terms for the specific card and program before making a financial decision.

United presented the changes as a way to reward loyalty. Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said, “MileagePlus is designed to reward loyalty to United, and our best customers deserve the best benefits in the industry.” Reuters framed the overhaul as intended to boost adoption and use of United card products; that is a reported description of United’s goal, not an independently verified motive. Reuters’ February 19, 2026 report summarizes the change and its stated aim.
