A pre-qualification result is not an approval: Discover says its check uses a soft inquiry, while a full application may lead to a hard inquiry. The Discover it Cash Back card advertises 5% cash back in activated quarterly categories up to a limit, 1% on other purchases, and a first-year Cashback Match; the offer and rewards rules matter as much as the headline rates.
How do I apply for a Discover credit card?
- Compare the current offers. Review the card’s rewards structure, annual fee, APR and the specific terms presented with the application. Discover’s card comparison page includes the it Cash Back and it Chrome cards. Rates, categories and offers can change, so use the terms displayed when you apply rather than assuming a general product page is your personalized offer.
- Optionally check pre-qualification. Use Discover’s card application page to access its preliminary eligibility check, if available. Discover says the check does not hurt your credit score because it uses a soft inquiry. A positive result is not a promise of approval.
- Submit the full application if the offer fits. Provide the requested application information, including income. Discover may review your credit report and application details to decide whether to approve you and what credit limit to offer. A full application may result in a hard inquiry.
- Read the final offer and disclosures before submitting. Confirm the APR, fees, rewards details and match period shown for your application. If approved, use the account terms and issuer instructions to activate the card and enroll in or activate quarterly rewards categories as required.
Discover says applicants must be at least 18 years old. For a step-by-step overview of online applications, see its online application guide.
Can I check if I’m pre-approved without hurting my credit score?
Discover says its pre-qualification check uses a soft inquiry and does not affect your credit score. This is different from applying: a full application may trigger a hard inquiry, and pre-qualification does not guarantee the issuer will approve the application. Discover explains the distinction in its guide to credit card pre-approval.
Use pre-qualification as an optional preliminary screen, not as certainty or a substitute for comparing the actual terms. The issuer can still deny an application after a favorable preliminary result.

What credit score do I need for a Discover card?
Discover does not publish one minimum credit score that guarantees approval for every card. Its decision can depend on credit history and other application information, including income; a particular score alone cannot promise approval. Discover also does not guarantee a specific credit limit based on pre-qualification. Its explanation of credit scores for Discover applications discusses the factors without setting a universal cutoff.
Applicants must be at least 18. If you are deciding whether to apply, consider the information in your credit report and whether the card’s terms suit your finances; do not treat a score estimate or preliminary offer as an approval decision.

How does Discover Cashback Match work?
Discover advertises an automatic dollar-for-dollar match of the cash back earned during the first 365 days from account approval. The product-page terms say the match is added within two billing periods after the match period. This is a defined introductory offer—not a continuing match of all future rewards—and the exact offer can vary. Check the match language attached to your application before submitting.
For the Discover it Cash Back card, the issuer advertises 5% cash back on selected rotating quarterly categories when activated, up to the applicable quarterly maximum, and 1% on other purchases. A 5% headline rate therefore applies only to eligible purchases in the quarter’s categories, under that quarter’s limit and activation requirement. Categories and limits are set by Discover; they are not a permanent set of spending categories.

What purchases earn the advertised cash back?
Activation is required for each quarter. Discover’s Cashback Bonus program terms say rewards accrue on eligible, processed transactions and list exclusions such as cash advances and balance transfers. Merchant and payment details can also affect whether Discover can identify a transaction as eligible. Some rewards may take one to two billing periods to post. Read the Cashback Bonus Program Terms and Conditions alongside the current product offer.
- Activate the quarter’s categories before relying on the 5% rate.
- Check the category definitions and quarterly maximum in the current offer.
- Do not assume every purchase that seems to fit a category will qualify; transaction type and merchant information can matter.
- Rewards generally do not expire while the account stays open under the program, but the terms also describe disbursement of remaining rewards if an account closes or has been unused for 18 months. Check the program terms for the applicable conditions.
Discover it Cash Back vs. Discover it Chrome
The two cards use different reward structures. The most useful choice depends on how your ordinary spending aligns with the categories, limits and activation requirements—not on the highest headline percentage alone.

What to check before you submit
- Whether the rewards fit your spending: rotating categories can pay more on qualifying purchases, but they require activation and may not cover the expenses you make most often.
- The limits: identify the quarterly cap or combined purchase limit and what rate applies after it is reached.
- The exact introductory offer: confirm how the match period is defined and when matched rewards are credited.
- The borrowing cost: compare the APR and fees in your application disclosures. Rewards do not make carrying a balance inexpensive.
- The application distinction: pre-qualification is a soft-inquiry check according to Discover; a full application may involve a hard inquiry and can still be denied.
