The most popular platform depends on what you mean by “popular.” Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp are close in global self-reported monthly use; Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn lead a 2026 survey of marketers; and YouTube leads the listed platforms in U.S. adult use. None of those rankings proves which platform will produce the best results for your business. Choose based on where your customers are, what you want to achieve and what you can consistently publish and manage.
Which social media platforms are most popular?
The figures below come from different populations and measure different things. Global self-reported use, marketer adoption and U.S. adult use are not interchangeable rankings.

DataReportal’s global figures reflect monthly self-declared use among internet users aged 16+ and include users in China and Russia, where some Western platforms are blocked or restricted. They are not the same as active app usage. Statista’s marketer figures come from a worldwide survey conducted in January 2026 with 840 respondents; participants could select multiple platforms. Pew’s figures describe U.S. adults and come from a fact sheet updated June 18, 2025. DataReportal, Statista and Pew Research Center therefore provide useful but distinct snapshots.
Which platform should your business consider?
Facebook: broad consumer reach and community
Facebook ranks highly in global self-reported use and marketer adoption. It is a reasonable candidate for broad consumer reach and community-building, but check whether your customers are active there in your particular location rather than assuming the global figures apply to them.

Instagram: a visual channel for consumer-facing offers
Instagram has high global use and marketer adoption. The cited marketer survey says B2C marketers prioritize it alongside Facebook. Consider it when images or video can clearly communicate your offer; the available figures do not establish that it will perform well for any particular business.
YouTube: searchable demonstrations and longer video
YouTube is near the top in global self-reported use, leads the listed platforms in Pew’s U.S. adult figures and is used by 58% of marketers in the Statista survey. It may fit a business that can create useful video demonstrations or explainers and sustain the production effort.

LinkedIn: professional relationships and B2B
LinkedIn was used by 72% of marketers in Statista’s worldwide survey. The survey summary describes B2B professionals as concentrating on LinkedIn because of its professional context. Consider it for business-to-business offers, recruiting, expertise and professional relationships, then measure whether your own audience responds.
TikTok: short-form video when it fits your audience
TikTok appears in all three sets of figures, though its position differs by population and measure. It may be worth testing if short-form video suits your audience and your team can make it consistently. These adoption and usage statistics do not show that TikTok delivers a universal growth advantage.

WhatsApp: direct communication where customers prefer it
WhatsApp is close to the top in global self-reported monthly use and Pew reports use among 32% of U.S. adults. A messaging service may suit businesses whose customers prefer direct communication, subject to local norms and appropriate consent. The cited sources do not establish specific business features or legal requirements.
X and Threads: consider audience and conversation fit
In the Statista marketer survey, adoption was lower for X and Threads than for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. That does not rule them out: either may fit a specific audience or a conversation-led objective. Validate the fit rather than treating adoption rank as a verdict.

How to choose a platform without spreading yourself too thin
- Define your audience and geography. Identify who you need to reach and where they are. Use local customer knowledge and platform-specific audience data where available; a global user count is not proof that your customers are there.
- Choose one business objective. Decide whether the priority is awareness, qualified leads, customer support, sales, recruiting or retention. A clear objective makes it possible to judge whether a channel is useful.
- Match the objective to a format you can sustain. Consider whether your business can regularly create text, images, short video, long video or direct messages—and can respond to the interactions those formats bring.
- Start with a manageable shortlist. Marketers commonly use multiple platforms, but that does not mean a small business should try to maintain every account. Pick one or two plausible options and expand only when the workload and results justify it.
- Measure business outcomes. Track a result tied to your objective, such as qualified inquiries, conversions, repeat customers or recruiting outcomes, alongside reach and engagement. The figures cited here describe usage and marketer adoption; they do not establish that a platform causes higher sales or return on investment.
When comparing options, weigh audience fit, geographic reach, content format, interaction style, production workload and measurable outcomes. Call a platform “best” only in relation to a defined business, audience and goal.
