The PG&E wildfire settlement did not send each eligible fire survivor a single check. The Fire Victim Trust reviews claims, issues award determinations, and pays eligible claimants in installments as funds become available. In its report dated September 30, 2026, the Trust said it had awarded $19.57 billion and paid $13.72 billion. Its announced final 1.25% distribution was scheduled for October 14, 2026—after the date of this article—so its completion cannot yet be confirmed.
What the PG&E wildfire settlement covered
The Fire Victim Trust was established in 2020 through PG&E’s bankruptcy to review and compensate eligible claims tied to three groups of fires: the 2015 Butte Fire, the 2017 North Bay fires, and the 2018 Camp Fire. The Trust—not PG&E issuing an individual settlement check to each claimant—administers the claims and payment process. Fire Victim Trust · About the Trust
Eligibility generally required a claim related to an included fire, a Proof of Claim filed by the extended bankruptcy bar date of December 31, 2019, and supporting documentation. Filing on time did not guarantee approval: the Trust could determine that a claim failed its eligibility criteria. Fire Victim Trust FAQ

| Trust-reported measure | September 30, 2026 status |
|---|---|
| Amount awarded in Determination Notices | $19.57 billion |
| Amount paid to claimants | $13.72 billion |
| Eligible claimants | 66,530 (93%) |
| Eligible claimants reported as paid | 66,171 (99% of eligible claimants) |
| Claimants with finalized Determination Notices | 71,787 (100%) |
| Claims Questionnaires with determinations | 40,407 |
These figures describe different stages. A Determination Notice states an award; “eligible” is a claim status; “paid” means the Trust reports a payment to the claimant. Neither a finalized notice nor a payment establishes that the claimant has received the full award.
Why payments took time and arrived in installments
The Trust says its approved Claims Resolution Procedures require one Determination Notice to cover all claims included in a claimant’s Claims Questionnaire. If information is missing for even one claim in that questionnaire, the Trust must seek supplemental documents before finalizing its review. The claimant may accept the initial determination or pursue reconsideration and appeal. Once the determination is accepted or the appeal process is complete, the determination becomes final and the claim can move to payment. Fire Victim Trust claims process

The Trust describes the fund as limited and says it paid claims in pro rata installments according to available cash, so eligible claimants received an equal proportion of their awards as funding permitted. On September 10, 2026, Trustee Cathy Yanni said the Trust had received all funds related to its Davey Tree Services settlement. She announced a final 1.25% pro rata distribution, which would bring aggregate pro rata payments to 71.25%, scheduled for October 14, 2026. The Trust said there would be no further pro rata distributions. Because that date is still in the future as of October 8, 2026, this article does not state that the distribution occurred. Trustee message and distribution update
The announced 71.25% aggregate level is not a guarantee that every claimant received exactly 71.25% of their own award. Claim-specific requirements, deductions, and other adjustments may affect an individual’s actual payments. To assess a personal case, compare the award with amounts actually received, determination and appeal status, completion of releases and other requirements, distribution timing, and case-specific adjustments—not the aggregate percentage alone.

Can someone file a late claim?
A claim filed after the December 31, 2019 bar date was not automatically accepted. According to the Trust, a late claimant first needed a bankruptcy-court order permitting late filing, then had to file the claim in the Chapter 11 case and submit it to the Trust within 30 days of that order. The Trust reserved the right to object, and eligibility remained subject to its procedures. The court’s case page says Proofs of Claim should be filed with the claims agent, not submitted to the court; that is historical filing guidance, not an invitation to file a new ordinary claim now. What recipients should know about taxes
The Trust’s updates archive records Trustee Cathy Yanni’s advocacy for legislation that would exclude qualified wildfire relief payments from gross income. That advocacy does not establish the current tax law or determine a recipient’s tax liability. Claimants should ask a qualified tax professional how their own settlement payments should be treated.
