There is no well-supported, definitive price ranking of the world’s most expensive yachts: construction costs, asking prices, valuations and completed sales are different figures, and builders do not disclose the prices of some of the best-known vessels. What is clear is why yachts at this scale can cost so much: bespoke engineering, exceptional size, complex onboard systems and spaces, and years of specialist construction.
What is the most expensive yacht in the world?
The answer depends on what “most expensive” means. A construction cost is what it took to build a yacht; an asking price is what a seller hopes to receive; a valuation is an estimate of worth; and a sale price is the amount paid in a completed transaction. Those figures are not interchangeable, so rankings that mix them cannot establish a reliable winner.
Lürssen’s published pages provide specifications and build details for Azzam and Dilbar, but do not disclose either yacht’s construction price. That makes their size and complexity verifiable, while widely circulated price rankings remain difficult to confirm.
A dated asking price is not a confirmed sale
In August 2026, Superyacht Times reported that I Dynasty was listed for €240 million. That is a time-specific asking price, not evidence that the yacht sold for that amount or that it cost that much to build. Listings and asking prices can change.

Why the History Supreme figure is not established
The often-repeated claim that History Supreme cost $4.8 billion is not established by the available material. A primary confirmation of that figure was not found, so it should not be presented as a verified construction cost or proof that the yacht is the world’s most expensive.
Why do yachts cost so much?
At the top end of the market, a yacht is a one-off vessel built around an owner’s requirements, not a standard product with a dependable list price. Its cost reflects the combination of hull scale, propulsion and performance targets, technical systems, interior spaces, and the specialist work needed to design and assemble them.

Scale creates more than a longer hull
Length and gross tonnage describe different aspects of size. Length measures the vessel from end to end; gross tonnage is a measure of enclosed volume, not weight. Both help illustrate the scale of the spaces and systems involved, but neither tells you a yacht’s price on its own.
Lürssen gives Azzam’s length as 180.65 metres. It describes the yacht as exceeding 30 knots and says it was delivered in 2013, less than three years after keel laying. Those specifications document an unusual combination of size, speed and build schedule; Lürssen does not publish the construction cost.

Dilbar is 156 metres long and 15,917 gross tonnage, according to Lürssen. Its dimensions indicate a different measure of scale from length alone: the vessel also has a substantial enclosed volume for onboard spaces and systems.
Bespoke engineering and performance targets
Owners may ask designers and engineers to meet requirements that go beyond simply building a large vessel. Lürssen says Azzam was designed for unusually high speed in warm, shallow waters and names engineering and design contributors to the project. Achieving a particular mix of speed, operating conditions and size requires a tailored approach, though the published information does not price that work separately.

Complex systems and extensive onboard spaces
Large yachts need integrated systems to support propulsion, navigation, power, safety and the people aboard. They can also include extensive recreation and interior spaces. Lürssen describes Dilbar as technologically sophisticated and “one of the most complex and challenging yachts ever built,” and says its recreation spaces were unprecedented on a yacht. These are the builder’s characterizations, not independent assessments, but they show why a headline length alone cannot explain the engineering and outfitting involved.
Long builds require specialist coordination
Custom construction involves coordinating design, engineering, specialist suppliers and work at the shipyard. Lürssen reports that Azzam took less than three years from keel laying to delivery, while Dilbar’s project took 52 months. These are builder-stated timelines for those projects, not a standard schedule for every superyacht.

How much does it cost to run a superyacht?
There is no universal annual figure that can responsibly be applied to every yacht, and no substantiated annual operating budget for Azzam or Dilbar is available here. A percentage-based rule of thumb may be useful as a rough estimate only if its assumptions are clear; it is not an audited account or a reliable prediction for an individual vessel.
Typical ownership budgets need to account for categories such as:
- Crew: salaries, recruitment, training and onboard provisions.
- Fuel: consumption varies with the yacht’s engines, speed, route and time underway.
- Insurance and berthing: costs depend on the vessel, its use and where it is kept.
- Maintenance and refits: routine servicing and larger projects can vary with condition, age and equipment.
- Management: administration and operational support depend on how the yacht is run.
These categories explain why the purchase price is only part of the financial commitment. They do not support a specific annual total for a named yacht.
How to judge claims about yacht prices
Before treating a headline figure as fact, identify what it measures and who reported it. A useful comparison should distinguish transaction evidence from estimates and listings, and should not treat different size measurements as substitutes for one another.
