Its history combines a craft-led design identity, retail growth and changes in corporate ownership—three threads that are easy to confuse but distinct.
When was Coach founded?
Coach says it was founded in New York in 1941, when six artisans began making leather goods. The company describes the house as growing under the vision of Lillian and Miles Cahn, and calls it the “Original American House of Leather”—a phrase that is Coach’s own description, not an independent industry designation. Coach’s official history presents the early business as a family-run leather-goods company.
How did Bonnie Cashin shape Coach?
In 1962, Miles Cahn hired Bonnie Cashin as Coach’s first lead designer. Coach credits her with bringing an approach to color, proportion and quirk that helped the brand express what it calls the spirit of 1960s New York. That is the company’s interpretation of her influence, rather than an independently measured assessment. Coach’s history identifies Cashin as a key figure in its design story.
From leather-goods company to fashion house
Coach says it later opened its first store on Madison Avenue and grew from a family-run leather-goods company into an internationally known fashion house. Its current history page does not give the store’s opening date, so it should not be assigned a year based on this account alone. The brand’s official narrative links this retail expansion to its transition from a small leather specialist to a broader fashion business. Coach’s account is the source for that description.

Coach’s ownership and public-company milestones
Corporate ownership changed while Coach remained a distinct fashion brand. The dates below come from Coach announcements and company filings.
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1985 | Sara Lee acquired Coach, according to Coach’s 2000 investor-relations announcement. Source |
| October 4, 2000 | Coach announced an initial public offering and listing on the New York Stock Exchange. The announcement is dated October 4, 2000. Source |
| April 2001 | Sara Lee distributed its remaining ownership in Coach after the IPO, according to Coach’s SEC-filed company history. Source |
These events describe ownership and public-market status, not a change in Coach’s creative identity. They also do not mean that the Coach label became interchangeable with other brands later held by its parent company.

Coach within a wider brand portfolio
Coach’s fiscal 2017 filing records that its parent company acquired Stuart Weitzman in 2015 and Kate Spade in 2017. Those were portfolio acquisitions by the parent company; Stuart Weitzman and Kate Spade are separate brands, not Coach product lines. Because the filing reflects the company structure at its reporting date, it should not be treated on its own as a definitive roster of the parent company’s present-day holdings. The fiscal 2017 filing documents those acquisitions.
Stuart Vevers and Coach’s heritage
Coach says Stuart Vevers has reimagined its heritage since 2013. That description frames the modern creative direction as a reinterpretation of the house’s past, rather than a break from its leather-goods origins. The brand’s history page gives the company’s account of his role.
