The gambler’s fallacy is the mistaken belief that an outcome becomes more likely because it has not happened recently—or less likely because it has happened repeatedly—when each trial is independent. After four heads on a fair coin, for example, tails is not “due”: assuming the coin is fair and tosses are independent, the next toss still has a 50% chance of heads and a 50% chance of tails.
Why isn’t red due after several black results?
At roulette, a run of black results can make red feel overdue. But if spins are independent, earlier results do not change the probability of the next spin. A streak may look as though it needs correcting; the wheel has no mechanism that remembers the previous results and balances them out. Penn State uses this roulette question to illustrate independence: Penn State STAT 414: Independent Events.
The same logic applies to repeated tosses of a fair coin. If the previous tosses were heads, that history does not make tails more likely on the next toss under the fair, independent-coin model. The fallacy is treating the next result as if it must compensate for the recent sequence. Oxford Bibliographies explains that independent coin tosses and roulette outcomes have no systematic connection across successive trials: Oxford Bibliographies: Gambler’s Fallacy.
What a streak does—and does not—tell you
A run can happen without creating a correction
Random sequences can contain runs and imbalances. A run may seem surprising or non-random, but its occurrence alone does not make the opposite result more likely on the next independent trial. For example, if a fair coin lands heads four times, the next toss is still equally likely to be heads or tails. Expecting tails because four heads have appeared is the gambler’s fallacy.

Long-run averages are not short-run schedules
Over many trials, observed proportions may tend toward their expected values. That does not mean a short sequence must quickly balance out. The mistaken step is turning a long-run tendency into a near-term schedule—for instance, assuming that a streak of black roulette outcomes means red must appear soon. The Open University discusses this distinction in its teaching explanation: OpenLearn: Teaching mathematics, section 4.2.
When past results can matter
The fallacy is specifically about independent trials; it does not mean past data is always irrelevant. In a dependent process, or when the conditions change, previous outcomes may provide evidence about what happens next. If a coin may be biased, a roulette wheel may have a mechanical fault, or a process has changed, observations can help assess the process. That is evidence-based inference, not a rule that a random-looking streak must reverse.

One explanation discussed in the literature is representativeness: people may expect a short random sequence to resemble their idea of a typical random sequence, with fewer long runs or imbalances. That can make a streak seem like something that should soon be corrected. It is an explanation offered in reference literature, not a proven single cause of every instance: Sage Research Methods: Gambler’s Fallacy.
