The latest monthly Treasury-sourced figure available here is the same amount for August 2026; it is a reported reserve figure, not a physical count made this week. The official records also describe historical audits, but they do not establish a new public, bar-by-bar audit or a Fort Knox development during October 5–8, 2026.
How much gold does Fort Knox reportedly hold?
The United States Mint lists 147,341,858.382 fine troy ounces at Fort Knox. The Treasury-sourced monthly series distributed by FRED reports that same quantity for August 2026. The August observation is a reserve-series value—not an October physical count. The Mint’s Fort Knox facility page and FRED’s Treasury-sourced series identify the figure and its context.
The Mint describes Fort Knox as a precious-metal reserve storage facility, not a production facility, and says public visitors are not permitted. It gives standard gold-bar dimensions as 7 inches by 3⅝ inches by 1¾ inches, with an approximate weight of 400 ounces, or 27.5 pounds. Those are general bar specifications, not a claim that every bar in the vault has been publicly counted or inspected.
Is $42.22 the current value of the Fort Knox gold?
No. The Mint lists $42.22 per fine troy ounce as a statutory book value. It explicitly says this figure does not fluctuate with the market price, so it should not be read as the current market value of the reserve. The Mint’s facility page provides the statutory-value explanation.

Has Fort Knox ever been audited?
Yes. Official historical records describe a 1974 Government Accountability Office examination of about 21% of Fort Knox’s bars; Treasury OIG testimony says the gold examined agreed with the depository’s records. Treasury then conducted a longer audit process involving deep-storage gold from 1975 through 1986. A 2011 House hearing record states that by 1986, 97% of Mint-held gold had been audited and placed under official joint seal. These figures describe historical work and its scope—not a new 2026 physical count. Treasury OIG testimony and the House hearing record document that history.
Does a recent Treasury OIG audit listing prove a new bar-by-bar count?
No. The Treasury Inspector General’s audit index lists OIG-26-002, an audit of the Mint’s custodial deep-storage gold and silver reserve schedules as of September 30, 2025 and 2024, dated December 12, 2025. The listing establishes that an audit of reserve schedules was identified; its title and index entry alone do not establish a public, bar-by-bar Fort Knox inspection or assay. The Treasury OIG audit index provides the entry.

- IMPORTANT NOTE: This chocolate product is very sensitive to the heat. Although we do add an ice pack, it cannot ship when temperatures are above 85 degrees. Please do not order this product if temperatures at your destination is in this range. We cannot ship it in these conditions as it is more likely to arrive melted (Please do not order during summer to ship to FL, TX, AZ, GA, AL, MS…)
These are different kinds of claims: a schedule audit concerns reserve records, while a claim about inspecting individual bars would need evidence that specifically describes physical, bar-level work. Do not treat one as proof of the other.
What is actually established about “this week”?
The official materials identified here do not establish a Fort Knox development or a new public, bar-by-bar audit during October 5–8, 2026. The latest monthly quantity cited is for August 2026, and the OIG listing described above is dated December 12, 2025. That does not prove that nothing happened; it means the available authoritative records do not substantiate a specific event in that October 5–8 window. For a claim made after that period, check for a dated official announcement or report rather than treating an older reserve figure as a new count.

Why the reserve number can be confused with a new audit
A precise number can look like the result of a fresh physical count, but precision alone does not tell you when or how the quantity was established. Here, the Mint page reports the facility quantity and FRED’s Treasury-sourced series attaches the same number to an August 2026 observation. Neither detail turns that observation into an October inspection.
The Mint also reports a historical peak of 649.6 million ounces on December 31, 1941. That is a dated historical figure, distinct from the current reported reserve quantity. The Mint’s Fort Knox page gives the peak figure.
