Why Boeing Planned to Increase 787 Dreamliner Production—and Where the Rate Stands

Boeing tied its 2024 787 expansion plan to demand and capacity, but its Q2 2026 filing reported a stabilized rate of eight aircraft a month—not the announced target of ten.

Boeing’s announced reason for expanding 787 Dreamliner production was to build capacity for the aircraft family amid customer demand and a large commercial-aircraft backlog. In December 2024, the company set a goal of ten 787s a month by 2026, alongside a planned $1 billion investment in South Carolina and 500 jobs over five years. That goal is not the latest reported rate: Boeing’s filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, says production had stabilized at eight a month.

Why Boeing planned to raise 787 production

The evidence points to capacity planning in response to demand—not one proven, exclusive motive. Boeing’s December 2024 announcement paired its target of ten aircraft a month by 2026 with plans to expand its South Carolina infrastructure and workforce. The company said all 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft are built at its North Charleston facility. Boeing’s announcement described the investment and hiring as part of the production expansion plan.

A more recent order illustrates customer interest without proving that orders alone drove the rate decision. In July 2026, AerCap ordered 15 787-9s. Boeing and AerCap framed the order in the context of demand for modern, fuel-efficient widebody aircraft and long-haul connectivity. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said the order underscored the 787’s role in “enabling long-haul connectivity and superior economics for airlines.” That is Boeing’s characterization, not an independent measure of market demand. The order announcement provides the details.

Boeing also reported that the 787 family had opened more than 540 nonstop routes between city pairs not previously served and had carried more than 1.3 billion passengers since entering service. Those are company-reported cumulative figures; they describe the aircraft’s history, not current orders or the economics behind a particular production-rate decision.

How many 787s Boeing builds per month

Figure What it means Timing and context
10 aircraft per month Boeing’s announced target, not a confirmed achieved rate Announced in December 2024 for 2026, with a planned $1 billion South Carolina infrastructure investment and 500 jobs over five years. Boeing announcement
8 aircraft per month Boeing’s reported stabilized production rate Reported in Boeing’s filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The company said it began increasing to this rate in Q4 2025 and stabilized after a supply-chain-related slowdown in April 2026 and recovery in May. Boeing SEC filing

The more current benchmark is therefore eight a month, not ten. Boeing said it continued stabilization work during the first quarter of 2026, briefly slowed production in April because of supply-chain shortages, and recovered in May. It attributed the subsequent stabilization at eight a month to continued supply-chain and factory recovery. The filing does not establish a later rate change.

Production rate is not the same as deliveries

Boeing reported 25 787 deliveries in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 24 in the same quarter of 2025. For the first half of 2026, it reported 40 deliveries, up from 37 in the first half of 2025. These are delivery totals, not monthly production rates: an aircraft is delivered after it is manufactured, and delivery timing can be affected by inventory, certification and other factors. The figures appear in Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 filing.

What the FAA’s 2026 decision means

On July 17, 2026, the FAA announced that Boeing could resume issuing airworthiness certificates for all 787s, effective July 20. The agency said the decision followed eight months of data showing comparable production-quality findings when Boeing and FAA inspectors issued certificates. The FAA had stopped Boeing from issuing 787 airworthiness certificates in 2022 over production-quality issues.

The change restores Boeing’s authority to issue the certificates; it does not end federal oversight. The FAA said it would continue inspections, audits and monitoring of Boeing’s production system. Administrator Bryan Bedford said, “Safety drives everything we do, and this step forward is only possible because we are confident it can be done safely.” The agency’s account and statement are in its July 17, 2026 announcement.

What the production plan does—and does not—show

  • It shows: Boeing planned to add 787 capacity, support that plan with South Carolina investment and hiring, and reported a stabilized rate of eight aircraft a month in its second-quarter 2026 filing.
  • It does not show: that Boeing had reached ten aircraft a month by 2026, that customer orders were the sole reason for the plan, or that the latest reported rate remained unchanged after June 30, 2026.
