In February 2025, WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said the airline had seen an approximately 25% decline in Canadian bookings or demand for U.S.-bound travel. That was WestJet’s estimate—not a national statistic or a count of completed trips—and the published accounts describe its comparison period differently.
What WestJet’s 25% figure describes
Von Hoensbroech made the comment at a press conference on February 13, 2025; CityNews Calgary reported it the next day. He said, “Sales from Canadians into the U.S. have dropped very significantly,” and the report characterized the decline as about 25%. CityNews Calgary
The figure refers to WestJet’s own sales, bookings or demand for U.S.-bound travel. CityNews described bookings dropping over the prior week, while the Associated Press described demand in the first weeks of 2025 compared with the same period a year earlier. Those are not identical comparison windows. WestJet did not publish the underlying booking data or explain the method, so the estimate should not be read as a precise, independently verified measurement. Associated Press
Why the decline was reported—and what remains uncertain
The news came amid tariff threats and rising political tension between Canada and the United States. That timing does not establish that tariffs or politics alone caused the reported change. WestJet said currency exchange rates may also have played a part. In an email quoted by AP, the airline said it believed the change was “at least partially linked to the differences in currency exchange rates” and that it was reviewing potential tariff impacts with the Canadian government. Air Canada was not seeing a reduction in U.S. travel at the time of AP’s February report, though it said it was monitoring the situation. That contrast is another reason not to treat one carrier’s booking estimate as a measure of all Canadian travel or airline demand. Associated Press
How it compared with broader travel figures
The U.S. Travel Association figures cited by AP provide context about the scale of Canadian travel, but they do not verify WestJet’s booking estimate. The association reported that Canadians made 20.4 million visits to the United States in 2024 and spent $20.5 billion there, supporting 140,000 American jobs. These are broader visitor and spending figures, not WestJet booking data. Associated Press

The association also estimated that a 10% reduction in Canadian travel could mean 2 million fewer visits, $2.1 billion less spending and 14,000 job losses. Those numbers were a scenario estimate, not observed outcomes or a forecast of what WestJet’s reported decline would produce. Associated Press

February: adjust if demand required it
In February, WestJet said it would continue flying where demand existed and adjust schedules if needed. CAPA’s March 9 analysis reported the approximate decline had remained at that level since the initial tariff announcements; it also noted that the CEO had not, at the time of his remarks, said WestJet would reduce capacity. March: two planned summer routes cancelled
By March 25, WestJet had cancelled planned summer 2025 service from Calgary to New York’s LaGuardia Airport and from Edmonton to Orlando. The airline said bookings were shifting from U.S. destinations toward Mexico, the Caribbean and transatlantic destinations. That reported shift does not establish that passengers whose U.S. plans changed rebooked on those routes. WestJet spokesperson Josh Yeats said schedule changes to serve guest demand are common across the aviation industry. CityNews Calgary
The route cancellations came later than the CEO’s February comments and were specific to two planned routes. They should not be described as proof that WestJet cut all U.S. service or that the airline attributed each cancellation solely to tariff threats.
