Angela Richardson-Mook says her experience as a gestational carrier shaped the agency she founded: Alcea Surrogacy. According to a 2025 profile, she carried six times between 2007 and 2014, then launched Alcea in 2020. The profile also reports her account of the agency’s clients and costs; Alcea’s current published pricing is a separate, more recent snapshot.

Who is Angela Richardson-Mook?

Richardson-Mook is the founder of Alcea Surrogacy and, according to both a 2025 profile and Alcea’s about page, a six-time gestational carrier. The profile says she first encountered a surrogacy agency at a nursing-school event in 2007. She carried three children for one New York couple and later carried for two other families, with her six surrogate births occurring between 2007 and 2014. She had a biological daughter in 2018 and founded Alcea in 2020.

The profile describes her brother’s coming out as one influence on her desire to help queer people build families. It also reports that she left a corporate career, used savings from her 401(k), and surveyed intended parents and surrogates while developing the agency. These are biographical details from the profile and Richardson-Mook’s interview, rather than independently verified findings. Read the profile republished by Smudge Report and Alcea’s founder biography.

How did her experience shape Alcea?

Richardson-Mook told the profile interviewer that feedback from intended parents and surrogates influenced Alcea’s approach. She cited concerns including unclear timelines, large upfront deposits, impersonal relationships, and cursory background checks, and said the agency aimed to address them. The profile reports that Alcea began in Texas and later became based in New York. These points describe her account and the profile’s reporting, not an independent assessment of the agency’s practices.

Alcea’s current website describes services that include appointment scheduling, travel and clinic coordination, partnership in egg-donor selection, coordination of the legal framework, and social-work support. It also describes screening and support for gestational carriers. These are services as presented by the agency; prospective clients should ask what is included in their specific agreement. Alcea’s pricing and services page and its agency information provide the agency’s descriptions.

What does “celebrity-loved” mean here?

The profile attributes to Richardson-Mook a count of 297 intended parents served, including 71 she described as high-net-worth clients or celebrities. She said non-disclosure agreements prevented her from identifying those clients. The counts and descriptions are interview-reported, not independently audited, so they do not establish the identity or status of any particular client.

Alcea also says 90% of its matches happen within the first meeting. That is an agency-reported outcome, not an independently validated result. People comparing agencies can ask how a match is defined, what happens if either party declines, and what timeline applies to their circumstances. Alcea’s about page and its guide to choosing an agency explain its own approach.

How much does surrogacy cost?

The figures in the 2025 profile and Alcea’s current published ranges describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable. Richardson-Mook told the profile that an intended-parent journey cost $170,000–$200,000 at the time of that interview. The profile also gave surrogate base pay of $60,000–$65,000, plus $10,000–$15,000 in extras, alongside possible reimbursement and insurance items. These are interview-period figures, not a current quote or a guarantee of what a journey costs.

Alcea’s pricing page, checked October 8, 2026, lists an agency fee of $50,000–$75,000 and surrogate compensation of $60,000–$100,000. The agency says compensation varies with location, insurance, experience, and other factors. Its agency-fee range is not an all-in journey total, so adding or substituting these numbers does not establish a complete budget.

Before comparing quotes, ask each agency for a written total estimate and an itemized explanation of what it includes. Alcea’s agency-selection guide advises readers to ask about services, fees, support, screening, and track record. Useful financial details to clarify include payment timing, refund or rematch terms, carrier compensation and benefits, and which costs may be paid outside the agency fee. Confirm current pricing and included items directly with the agency.

How can parents talk with children about surrogacy?

Richardson-Mook offered a personal observation in the interview: “It’s adults who make this weird, not the children.” It is her perspective, not a research finding about every family. Alcea’s FAQ says children’s books can help explain surrogacy, IVF, and family building. A relevant book can be one conversation aid; choose a title that fits the child’s age and your family’s story. Alcea’s FAQ also asks whether children born via surrogacy know about their surrogates.

What should prospective parents take from the story?

Richardson-Mook’s path from six surrogate births to founding an agency is the personal story behind Alcea. For anyone considering surrogacy, her story can explain the agency’s origin, but it cannot establish what an individual journey will cost, how quickly a match will happen, or whether a particular agency is the right fit. Treat interview figures as attributed accounts and agency claims as the agency’s own; make comparisons using current written estimates, service details, and terms for your situation.
