Deloitte announced plans to roll out Anthropic’s Claude to nearly 500,000 employees on October 6, 2025. At the same time, its Australian business agreed to repay the final instalment of a government contract after errors were found in an AI-assisted report. The two events illustrate different stages of AI use: a planned enterprise deployment and a completed government engagement with citation errors. The available reporting does not establish that Claude was used in the Australian report.
What Deloitte agreed to repay
Deloitte agreed to return the final instalment of its contract with Australia’s Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), which had commissioned a review of the Targeted Compliance Framework, including the IT system behind it. The exact refund amount is not established in the official letter or Associated Press report. What went wrong in the Australian report
AI was used for analysis and publication tasks
DEWR engaged Deloitte on December 23, 2024, to review the framework and provide an assurance statement and final report. In a September 2, 2025 letter to the Department of Finance, Deloitte said DEWR had approved a generative-AI toolchain licensed by the department and hosted in its Azure tenancy to support analysis of the code base. Deloitte also said its team used MyAssist and ChatGPT after the review to further summarise a prepared summary of the Deanna Amato proceeding and to complete and format citations according to a style guide. Some inaccurate citations escaped review
Deloitte’s letter says the team reviewed AI outputs, but corrected some errors and missed others. The firm’s official response says an investigation confirmed inaccurate footnotes and references resulting from AI use, and a later review found additional inaccurate outputs requiring correction. The Associated Press reported fabricated quotations attributed to a federal court judge and references to academic research that did not exist. The official letter confirms inaccurate AI outputs; the AP account describes errors in the report. The available accounts do not establish that every error was conclusively caused by AI. The report ran to 237 pages and reviewed departmental IT systems used to administer automated penalties in Australia’s welfare system. DEWR said the corrected report retained its substance and recommendations; the Guardian also reported that the updated report disclosed the Azure OpenAI GPT-4o toolchain and that recommendations had not changed. What Deloitte announced with Anthropic
On October 6, 2025, Deloitte announced a planned rollout of Claude to nearly 500,000 employees globally. The companies also planned compliance products and features for regulated fields including financial services, healthcare and public services. TechCrunch reported that Anthropic described the arrangement as an alliance; financial terms were not disclosed. Ranjit Bawa, Deloitte’s global technology and ecosystems and alliances leader, said the company was making a “significant investment” in Anthropic’s platform, citing alignment on responsible AI and the potential to change how enterprises operate. The timing puts the stories in tension, but it does not connect Claude to the errors in the Australian report. The report’s described tools and uses are distinct from the announced Anthropic rollout.

What the episode shows about AI-assisted professional work
Deloitte’s letter says engagement team members received training on responsible generative-AI use, including tool limitations, data handling, confidentiality where required, and the need to check outputs against source materials. The report errors show the practical limit of treating review as a guarantee: in this case, Deloitte said review caught some inaccuracies but not all. For a government assurance report, plausible-looking citations are not enough. The relevant checks include confirming quotations against the underlying judgment, verifying that cited studies exist, and ensuring references support the claims attached to them. Here, Deloitte said it corrected inaccurate outputs after review, DEWR said the recommendations stayed unchanged, and Deloitte agreed to repay the final instalment. Those facts distinguish the report’s substantive recommendations from the accuracy failures in its citations and references.
