The milestone describes 2024, not Tesla’s latest results: deliveries fell another 9% in 2025, to 1.64 million.
What the headline means
“Tesla sales fell for the first time in over a decade” refers to the company’s annual global vehicle deliveries in 2024. Tesla reported 1.79 million deliveries that year, compared with 1.81 million in 2023, a 1.1% decline. The Associated Press, citing Global Data figures, described it as Tesla’s first annual decline since 2011. AP’s January 2, 2025 report also noted deliveries of 1,306 in 2010 and 1,129 in 2011.
“Sales” is common shorthand, but the reported company-wide measure is deliveries; it should not be read as a count of registrations or independently audited end-customer sales. The comparison is annual and global, not a statement about any one country or quarter.
Why did Tesla deliveries decline in 2024?
There is no established, quantified breakdown showing how much of the decline came from any one cause. AP’s January 2025 account described a mix of market conditions and analyst interpretations:

- Slower EV-market growth: Demand for electric vehicles slowed in the United States and elsewhere, even as the U.S. market continued to grow. Motor Intelligence figures cited by AP put U.S. EV sales at about 936,000 through September 2024, up 7.2%. That covers the first nine months in one country, so it is not directly comparable to Tesla’s full-year global deliveries or proof of a global market trend.
- More competition: Tesla faced competition from both established automakers and newer EV makers.
- Product lineup and buyer concerns: Analysts cited by AP characterized Tesla’s lineup as aging or nearing saturation. They also pointed to mainstream-buyer concerns about price, driving range and charging access. Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein said, “The slight decline highlights that the current vehicle lineup is nearing market saturation.” Global Data vice president of automotive research Jeff Schuster said Tesla would need to expand “to other sizes and price points” to sustain its earlier growth. These are analysts’ assessments, not company findings.
- Discounting: AP reported that weakness early in the year led Tesla to offer discounts, which weighed on margins. That is a reported business consequence, not a measure of how many deliveries the discounts gained or lost.
- Possible political backlash: AP quoted analysts who suggested Elon Musk’s political activity could alienate some buyers. Schuster said he thought Musk’s political choices might not align with a portion of Tesla buyers. This is an attributed interpretation; the available figures do not measure its effect on deliveries.
The Model Y was part of the 2024 lineup and, in AP’s account, Tesla’s newest consumer model at the time; it first went on sale in 2020. That detail helps explain why analysts discussed product freshness, but it does not by itself establish that the Model Y caused the decline.
What happened after the 2024 decline?
Tesla reported a second consecutive annual fall in deliveries in 2025. It delivered 1.64 million vehicles, down 9% from 2024, according to AP’s January 2, 2026 report. AP also reported that BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles in 2025 and became the largest EV maker by sales. Those are the companies’ reported 2025 figures as presented by AP; they are not a comparison of profitability or revenue.

Why Tesla’s 2025 revenue decline is a different figure
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, says automotive sales revenue decreased by $6.66 billion, or 9%, compared with 2024. Tesla attributed the decline to approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price associated with sales mix and higher customer incentives. Revenue and delivery counts are different measures: a 9% revenue decline does not mean deliveries fell by 9% for that same financial explanation, even though AP separately reported a 9% year-over-year delivery decline.
The filing also reported a 28% decrease in regulatory credit revenue, partly in the context of governmental and regulatory actions restricting certain credit programs. Credit revenue is not vehicle-delivery volume, so it should not be treated as another explanation for the number of cars delivered.

How to read the headline in context
- The “first time” milestone is specifically the 2024 annual global delivery decline, measured against 2023.
- Analysts and AP described plausible pressures, but the evidence does not assign a precise share of the decline to competition, product age, market growth, buyer concerns, discounts or politics.
- The 2025 figures show that the decline was not confined to a single year: reported deliveries fell again, while the company’s filing separately explains changes in automotive revenue.
