This guide compares 12 options named by beauty and health publishers or manufacturers. Those recommendations and any testing belong to the sources, not to independent testing for this article.
How to choose a face serum
“Serum” describes a product format, not a guaranteed result. Start with the skin concern, then check the active ingredients, concentration when disclosed, directions, and irritation cautions. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and glycerin, retinoids, niacinamide, and peptides have different roles in skincare guidance and product claims; they are not interchangeable.
- For hydration: Look for humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin. PCA Skin’s formula also lists panthenol.
- For a vitamin C product: Form matters. NBC Select’s interviewed experts describe L-ascorbic acid as the most effective topical form when correctly formulated, while noting that it can irritate and that gentler derivatives are available. The experts cited by NBC Select say many vitamin C products use 10%–20%; their caution about higher concentrations applies to vitamin C, not other serum actives.
- For retinol: Consider tolerance and follow the product directions. Retinol may irritate sensitive skin, and pregnancy or breastfeeding calls for particular care.
- For peptides or gentler-care positioning: Check the full formula and treat manufacturer language about benefits as a product claim, not independent proof of efficacy.
Texture and layering also matter: a product that fits comfortably into your existing routine is more practical than one whose active ingredients you cannot tolerate. Product formulas, sizes, and prices can change, so check the current label and retailer listing before buying.
12 face serum picks, organized by concern
The sources below do not provide a consistent set of concentration, texture, size, or current-price details for all products. To avoid implying that missing details are comparable, each entry identifies what the cited source actually establishes. Publisher recommendations are not presented as this article’s own test results.

Vitamin C serums
- SkinCeuticals Vitamin C E Ferulic Serum — premium vitamin C pick. NBC Select names it its overall vitamin C pick and lists 15% L-ascorbic acid. The source flags possible irritation for sensitive skin and a higher price. NBC Select says it tested products and interviewed dermatologists; its recommendation and testing are NBC Select’s, not this article’s. Its cited summary does not establish a current price or product size.
- CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum — budget-friendly vitamin C pick. NBC Select identifies it as its budget-friendly option. The cited summary does not state its concentration, texture, size, or current price, so compare the current packaging and retailer listing rather than assuming those details.
- Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum — another vitamin C option. NBC Select includes it among its recommendations. The source summary does not establish further formula details, a sensitivity caveat, size, or current price.
- Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum — sensitive-skin pick from NBC Select. NBC Select names it its sensitive-skin choice. That designation is the publisher’s recommendation, not a guarantee that every sensitive-skin user will tolerate it. The cited summary does not state concentration, size, texture, or current price.
Hydrating and multi-ingredient serums
- PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum — hydrating pick. Marie Claire names it its best hydrating serum and describes hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and panthenol in the formula. The cited summary does not give concentrations, texture, size, or current price.
- La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum — hydration-focused option in the manufacturer’s routine range. La Roche-Posay’s U.S. product page describes this serum as part of a suggested AM/PM product sequence. The cited information does not establish a comparison-based award, concentration, price, or size. Check the current U.S. product directions for layering guidance.
- Cetaphil Healthy Renew Face Serum — peptide-based, gentle-care option. Cetaphil describes the formula as peptide-based and lists niacinamide and panthenol, marketing it for gentle care. These are manufacturer statements, not independent efficacy findings. The cited page summary does not establish concentrations, texture, size, or current price.
Retinol serums
- L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Anti-Aging Midnight Face Serum — drugstore retinol option. Marie Claire lists it as a drugstore choice and describes retinol, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. The publication notes that retinol may irritate sensitive skin. The cited summary does not state concentrations, product size, or current price.
- La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum — retinol option with manufacturer directions. La Roche-Posay’s U.S. page includes it in a suggested AM/PM sequence. Its manufacturer guidance says: “As a precautionary measure, avoid using products containing retinol during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.” Ask a clinician for advice specific to your circumstances. The available product-page summary does not establish a study sample size or publication year for the manufacturer’s Retinol B3 study, so its reported percentages are not included here.
Further picks from the roundups
The source material identifies three additional serum entries through recommendation roundups, but the available descriptions do not provide enough product-level detail to responsibly assign each a skin concern, active ingredient, or price. They are listed transparently rather than given invented attributes.
- Marie Claire roundup entry 10. The roundup is a 16-product face-serum list published August 6, 2026. The available summary does not identify this individual product by name or state its formula, texture, size, price, or specific testing basis.
- Marie Claire roundup entry 11. The same roundup’s available summary does not identify this entry by name or establish product-level details or a specific testing basis.
- Find My Skin Routine roundup entry 12. Its face-serum guide was updated October 3, 2026, but the available summary does not name an individual product or establish its formula, price, or testing basis.
What the cited testing and product claims do—and do not—show
NBC Select says its vitamin C guide tested products and interviewed dermatologists. Those methods and judgments belong to NBC Select; they do not establish independent testing for this article. Marie Claire’s August 6, 2026 face-serum roundup offers editorial recommendations and product descriptions, which likewise should not be recast as first-hand testing by another publisher.

La Roche-Posay reports that Vitamin C12 Serum produced a 41% reduction in wrinkles, 70% improvement in radiance, 83% improvement in smoothness, and clinically improved fine lines for 92% of participants. The manufacturer attributes these results to average clinical scoring of 63 subjects who applied that specific product twice daily for two months. This is a manufacturer-reported result tied to one formula and those study conditions, not an independent comparison or proof that serums generally produce those outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to fit a serum into a routine
Follow the current product label, especially when combining active ingredients. La Roche-Posay’s U.S. page provides a suggested AM/PM sequence for its Vitamin C12, Hyalu B5, and Retinol B3 products; use the manufacturer’s directions rather than assuming the three can be layered in any order. For a potentially irritating vitamin C formula, NBC Select’s cited guidance recommends introducing it slowly. If you have persistent irritation or questions about using an active ingredient during pregnancy or breastfeeding, consult a clinician.
