Tesla’s August 18, 2023 breach notice says two former employees misappropriated company information and shared it with German newspaper Handelsblatt. The notice identifies names and some contact details in records concerning certain current and former employees, but it does not state how many people were affected. The figure of more than 75,000 appears in breach-notification coverage; it is not confirmed by the primary notice reviewed here.
What Tesla says happened
Tesla says Handelsblatt informed the company on May 10, 2023 that it had obtained confidential Tesla information. The company’s investigation, as described in its August 18, 2023 notice of data breach, attributed the misappropriation and sharing to two former employees, alleging violations of Tesla’s IT-security and data-protection policies. The notice says Handelsblatt told Tesla it did not intend to publish personal information and was legally prohibited from using it inappropriately.
These are Tesla’s account and allegations in its notice; they should not be conflated with a regulator’s separate concerns about employee-data access inside the company.
What employee information was involved?
Tesla’s notice says records held in its capacity as employer included names and certain contact information, such as addresses, phone numbers and/or email addresses, for certain current and former employees. The wording does not establish that every person’s record contained every listed field, and it does not provide a complete inventory of the confidential material obtained by Handelsblatt.

How many employees were affected?
The story has been reported using a figure of more than 75,000 employees, but Tesla’s notice does not state a total affected-person count. Its California sample notification form contains placeholders rather than a verified population figure. The exact count therefore cannot be confirmed from that primary notice.
What action did Tesla say it took?
Tesla said it took steps to contain the incident, determine its scope and protect information. The notice also says the company filed lawsuits against the two former employees, obtained seizure of devices it believed contained Tesla information, and secured court orders prohibiting further use, access or dissemination subject to criminal penalties. Tesla said it cooperated with law enforcement and external forensic experts. These descriptions reflect the company’s notice; they do not establish the final outcome of the litigation.

What did the Brandenburg authority raise separately?
In a May 15, 2023 response reproduced by Handelsblatt, Brandenburg’s data-protection authority said it had serious indications of possible privacy violations. It raised a distinct concern: sensitive employee data might have been broadly accessible within Tesla because access rights were not sufficiently restricted. The authority said the matter would be especially serious if confirmed, given the potentially large number of people involved, and that employees at German and other European sites could be affected.
The authority described cross-border supervisory coordination, including notifying the Dutch authority and coordinating with Berlin’s authority. It explained that the authority responsible for Tesla’s European main establishment would have a role in cross-border processing cases. This contemporaneous account describes the intended process, not its eventual findings or outcome. The access-control concern is not the same as Tesla’s account of information shared with Handelsblatt, and the materials cited here do not establish that they were one proven finding.

Did Tesla say the data was misused?
Tesla’s notice said it had no evidence that personal information was misused in a manner that could harm the recipient. That is the company’s statement about what it knew at the time; it does not prove misuse was impossible or represent a regulator’s finding that no harm occurred.

Tesla’s notice advised recipients to watch for phishing, review account statements and credit history, and consider fraud alerts, credit freezes and free credit reports. Its incident-specific Experian IdentityWorks monitoring and identity-detection/restoration offer had an enrollment deadline of November 30, 2023, so that historical offer should not be treated as available now.

- Be cautious with unexpected messages that claim to come from Tesla, a bank or another service and ask you to click a link, open an attachment or share credentials. Use a known, independently obtained contact method to check suspicious requests.
- Review financial account activity and credit history for unfamiliar transactions or accounts. Contact the relevant institution promptly if you find something suspicious.
- Consider whether a fraud alert or credit freeze suits your circumstances. A freeze restricts access to your credit file for many new-credit checks; a fraud alert asks creditors to take additional steps to verify identity. Check the current official requirements and implications before placing either.
- If you received Tesla’s notice, use its contact information to ask what information about you was involved and whether any support remains available. Do not assume the expired monitoring enrollment can be reopened.
