Tesla reported 462,890 vehicle deliveries for the third quarter of 2024. That was 420 below the 463,310 FactSet StreetAccount estimate cited in a contemporaneous report, and Tesla shares fell as much as 3.7% afterward, according to that report. The comparison depends on which estimate source is used: the Associated Press cited a separate FactSet estimate of 462,000, which Tesla slightly exceeded.
What Tesla reported—and which estimate it missed
On October 2, 2024, Tesla announced 462,890 deliveries for Q3. The contemporaneous report syndicated by CNBC cited a FactSet StreetAccount estimate of 463,310, putting Tesla 420 vehicles short of that benchmark. The report also listed 469,796 vehicles produced in the quarter.
The Associated Press gave a different comparison: it reported a FactSet estimate of 462,000 deliveries. Against that rounded figure, Tesla finished slightly above expectations. These are distinct estimates reported by different outlets; there is no single figure that should be attributed to all analysts. The AP’s October 2, 2024 report also compared the quarter with 435,059 deliveries in Q3 2023.
| Q3 2024 measure | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla deliveries | 462,890 | Reported total cited by both contemporaneous reports. |
| FactSet StreetAccount estimate cited by CNBC’s syndicated report | 463,310 | Tesla was 420 below this estimate. |
| FactSet estimate cited by AP | 462,000 | Tesla was slightly above this separate, rounded estimate. |
| Tesla production | 469,796 | Vehicles produced, a different measure from deliveries. |
| Q3 2023 deliveries, as reported by AP | 435,059 | Year-earlier comparison. |
Why did Tesla shares fall?
The two reports describe a modest shortfall against one estimate and a morning share-price decline, but they do not establish that the estimate gap alone caused the move. The AP said investors had hoped for an even better result, despite Tesla’s year-over-year delivery increase. It reported that shares fell nearly 4% in morning trading. The CNBC-syndicated report described a decline of as much as 3.7%. Those figures reflect different reporting and measurement descriptions, so they should not be treated as a single precise closing-day return.

The AP reported that low-interest financing, lease deals, price cuts and free charging helped boost global deliveries; it also said nearly all Tesla sales came from Models 3 and Y. These are market context reported by AP, not proof that any one factor drove the stock reaction.
AP quoted Wedbush analyst Dan Ives calling deliveries “good and a step in the right direction,” while noting pressure because investors had wanted an even better result. Ives also said that getting into the range of 1.8 million for the year remained an important target. These were his views at the time, not a confirmed outcome or a guarantee of future performance.

Deliveries are not a complete financial result
Delivery counts show how many vehicles reached customers under the company’s reporting measure; production counts vehicles made. Neither figure, by itself, establishes revenue, margins, net income, cash flow or profitability. Tesla’s October 2, 2026 release cautioned that deliveries and storage deployments are only two measures of financial performance and should not be relied on as indicators of quarterly financial results. The company said its fuller Q3 2026 financial results would be published after market close on October 21, 2026. See Tesla’s Q3 2026 production and deliveries release.

The October 2024 headline is historical, not a description of Tesla’s latest quarter. Tesla’s October 2, 2026 release reported 486,532 Q3 deliveries and 464,391 vehicles produced. Its September 29, 2026 company-compiled consensus listed 461,974 average deliveries and a 463,406 median across 24 estimates. The reported 2026 delivery total exceeded both consensus figures. The underlying figures are in Tesla’s delivery release and delivery consensus.

Axios reported that Q3 2026 deliveries were up 1.3% from Q2 and down 2.1% year over year, and that Tesla and Rivian shares rose in early trading Friday. That later market reaction is a separate event; stock moves depend on the measurement window and should not be inferred from delivery totals alone. See Axios’s October 2, 2026 report.
