For U.S. drivers, a routine oil-and-filter change commonly falls in a broad range of about $20–$100, according to AAA Auto Club Group’s April 2026 guidance. NerdWallet’s September 2025 guide puts quick-lube shop changes at roughly $30–$100. These are reference ranges, not a guaranteed price or a single, nationally representative average: your vehicle, oil requirements, location, and the services included all matter.
The best way to judge a quote is to compare it with your owner’s manual and get the shop to spell out the oil, quantity, filter, labor, fees, and add-ons before work begins. A recommendation by itself does not prove you’re being scammed; the key is whether it is supported by your vehicle’s schedule or an observed condition, and whether you approve the work.
How much does an oil change cost?
Current U.S. references put a typical oil-and-filter change in the tens of dollars to around $100, but there is no well-established current national average based on a stated representative sampling method among these sources. Use the ranges as a starting point for comparing local quotes, not as a price guarantee.
| Reference | Published estimate | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| AAA Auto Club Group, April 2026 | $20–$100 | A typical oil-and-filter change; price and interval depend on vehicle and other factors. |
| NerdWallet, updated September 25, 2025 | About $30–$100 | Quick-lube shops. It also estimates DIY at about $30–$45. |
| Consumer Reports, May 2026 | $75–$150 | A broad oil-change reference, not a local quote. |
The estimates differ because they are broad guides rather than a standardized survey of the same service in the same places. A quote above one range is not automatically unreasonable, and a price below it is not automatically a bargain. Check what oil and quantity the package includes, whether the filter is included, and what fees or extra services are added.

Why the advertised price may not match your bill
- Oil type and specification: Conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic can carry different prices. Your vehicle may require a particular type or specification.
- Quantity: Some advertised packages cover only a stated number of quarts. A vehicle needing more may cost extra.
- Filter and labor: Confirm that the price includes the correct filter and installation labor.
- Fees and tax: Ask whether tax, supplies, and used-oil disposal are included or added.
- Package scope: A coupon may include inspections or tire rotation, or may exclude certain vehicles, oil types, or locations.

| Goodyear | $45.99–$98.99 |
| Jiffy Lube | $57.99–$104.99 |
| Meineke | $34.95–$74.95 |
| Pep Boys | $45–$100 |
| SpeeDee | $56.99–$82.99 |
| Take 5 | $50–$105 |

AAA Auto Club Group has also advertised a $69.99 synthetic-blend package for up to five quarts, with a standard filter, through November 30, 2026. The offer is limited to specified states; extra oil or a special oil or filter may cost more, and tax and supplies may apply. Check its offer terms and participating locations before relying on that price.
How to get a quote you can compare
Ask for the same work from each shop. Have your vehicle’s make, model year, trim, and engine details ready; these help the shop identify the right oil, filter, and capacity.

- Ask about restrictions. Confirm whether a coupon applies to your vehicle and location, and whether it excludes extra oil, a special filter, or other charges.
- Set an approval limit. Tell the shop to contact you before doing any work beyond the agreed service. Specify a dollar threshold if that is easier to enforce.
This makes it possible to distinguish a genuinely lower price from a package that covers less than your car needs. NerdWallet’s guide is at How Much Is an Oil Change?; AAA Auto Club Group’s general guidance is at Your Guide to Budgeting for Car Maintenance.
How to know if an oil-change upsell is necessary
A shop’s recommendation is not, by itself, evidence of fraud. It may be due under the manufacturer’s schedule, especially when the vehicle’s driving conditions or service history call for it. The Federal Trade Commission advises: “Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual for your type of driving.” It also recommends asking why the shop proposes work beyond that schedule.
Check the schedule and the service history
Look up the item in the owner’s manual and compare it with your maintenance records. Consider the schedule for your type of driving, not just a generic interval displayed at the shop. If the record is incomplete, say so rather than assuming a service is either due or unnecessary.

Ask what the recommendation is based on
Ask what condition the technician observed, what evidence supports the work, and whether it needs to be done now or can wait. For a filter, you can ask to see the old part or a photo if available. That is a reasonable way to understand the recommendation, not proof that the shop is dishonest.
Approve only the work you want done
Before work begins, ask for a written estimate that identifies the condition, parts, and anticipated labor. State that the shop must contact you before exceeding the estimate or doing additional work. The FTC’s guidance on choosing a repair shop and protecting yourself is available in Auto Repair Basics.
Keep records and get another opinion when warranted
Ask for an itemized completed repair order and keep it with your receipts and maintenance records. You may also ask for replaced parts when appropriate; state law may govern. If an expensive or complicated repair remains in doubt, consider another opinion. Keep notes and try to resolve the issue with the shop first; for an unresolved dispute, the FTC points consumers to state or local consumer-protection channels.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What oil does your car need?
Use the owner’s manual to determine the required oil grade, specification, and service interval. Some newer vehicles require synthetic oil; do not substitute conventional oil if the manual specifies synthetic. An upgrade is not necessary for every car simply because synthetic is available.
NerdWallet’s September 2025 guide reports an average $44 difference between synthetic and conventional oil based on its own collected price ranges. That figure is not a universal market-wide premium. AAA’s 2017 study found better performance for synthetic oil in its tests, while also advising vehicle owners to follow manufacturer specifications; it does not establish that all vehicles require synthetic oil.

Is DIY cheaper?
NerdWallet’s September 2025 guide estimates DIY oil changes at about $30–$45. Treat that as a broad estimate, not a complete current total for every vehicle: budget for the correct oil and filter, any tools or equipment you lack, and proper disposal of used oil. A safe workspace and the ability to perform the work correctly matter as much as the parts bill.
For context only, AAA’s 2017 study estimated the oil for a five-quart DIY change at $28 for conventional and $45 for synthetic. Those are historical oil-cost estimates, not current all-in DIY prices.
If shopping for supplies, a search such as “full synthetic motor oil 5 quart” is only a starting category query, not a recommendation for a particular grade or brand. Match the oil’s viscosity and specification to your owner’s manual. Choose an oil filter by exact vehicle fitment as well.
