Egg prices have been volatile, but the latest official figures do not support saying they are “pricier than ever” in October 2026. USDA reported that retail prices rose 3.5% from July to August 2026, yet were 23.0% lower than in August 2025. The agency forecasts a 29.4% average decline for 2026 compared with 2025—a forecast, not a promise about what any shopper will pay at a particular store.
Why did egg prices rise?
The clearest documented driver is highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), commonly called bird flu. When an outbreak is confirmed in a commercial flock, affected birds are depopulated to control the disease. Fewer laying hens mean less egg production, tightening supply and putting upward pressure on prices. USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) says the outbreak that began in 2022 increased egg prices by reducing egg-layer flocks and egg production.
The scale of the losses has been substantial. USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) counted 15,175,100 commercial table-egg layers depopulated in 2026 through April 24, across 24 confirmed outbreaks in five states. Those figures describe only the period through that report date, not the full year. Among the counted losses, 85% were conventional caged layers and 15% were cage-free layers.
How do cage-free laws affect availability and prices?
Cage-free rules can divide the market by production method and location. USDA ERS notes that California retailers must source cage-free eggs regardless of where the eggs were produced. If cage-free supply is disrupted, that requirement can make the disruption more consequential in markets that need cage-free products.

This is a regional supply mechanism, not a complete explanation for the national price spike. State requirements are not necessarily identical, and the California example does not establish that cage-free rules caused nationwide price increases. Cage-free and organic are also distinct labels: neither term should be treated as a synonym for the other when comparing cartons.
Are egg prices going down?
National prices were markedly lower year over year by August 2026, even though the month-to-month figure had turned upward. The following retail price changes are USDA ERS figures; the 2026 annual figure is a forecast rather than a recorded full-year result.

The forecast reflects an expected annual average, not a guaranteed reduction in every month, region, store, or carton type. Local prices can differ, and a brief monthly increase can occur while the annual comparison remains lower.
What could help supply recover—and what could disrupt it?
USDA ERS expects egg production to increase in 2026 as supply rebuilds. It also reported that replacement-pullet availability was sufficient in 2026 for ordinary flock turnover and unpredictable HPAI losses. That supports a recovery outlook, but new disease events could interrupt it.
