The right long-distance running shoe depends on where you run and what you need it to do—not on a single universal ranking. For everyday road miles, Runner’s World’s current guide names the Nike Vomero 18 its best overall pick; it names the New Balance Ellipse for value and the Brooks Glycerin 23 for marathon training. For trail, it recommends the Saucony Peregrine 17. Those are four of the seven shoes visible in the guide’s published quick-glance excerpt, so the available information does not support naming the other three.

For marathoners, the practical choice is often between a comfortable training shoe and a specialized race-day shoe. You do not need a dedicated racer to finish a marathon, and a shoe’s category or reputation cannot guarantee a faster time or prevent injury. Match the shoe to your fit, training, pace, surface, and budget.

Which long-distance shoes are named in the current guides?

There is no single agreed-upon set of “best” shoes: guides sort shoes by different purposes, such as daily training, cushioning, speed, stability, or trail use. The table separates Runner’s World’s four visible recommendations from other outlets’ picks; their categories should not be read as a combined ranking.

Guide and category Shoe What the category means
Runner’s World, best overall long-distance shoe Nike Vomero 18 Its overall recommendation for long-distance use.
Runner’s World, best value New Balance Ellipse Its value pick; no price or savings figure is established in the cited excerpt.
Runner’s World, best for marathon training Brooks Glycerin 23 Its training-focused recommendation.
Runner’s World, best for trail Saucony Peregrine 17 Its trail recommendation, not a road-shoe pick.
Marathon Handbook, neutral marathon training New Balance 1080 v15 A neutral-training category pick.
Marathon Handbook, overpronators training for a marathon ASICS GEL-Kayano 32 A category recommendation for runners seeking that support profile.
Marathon Handbook, value racer adidas Adizero Evo SL Its value-oriented racing category pick.
Marathon Handbook, fastest Nike Alphafly 3 A race-day speed category pick.
Marathon Handbook, speed and stability Saucony Endorphin Elite 2 A category pick combining those priorities.
Marathon Handbook, forefoot strikers ASICS Metaspeed Edge Tokyo A pick categorized for forefoot strikers.
Marathon Handbook, trail marathons Nike Ultrafly Trail A trail-marathon option, distinct from road shoes.
The Run Testers, consensus carbon-plate picks ASICS Metaspeed Sky and ASICS Metaspeed Edge Tokyo Its current carbon-plate recommendations; not a claim that either suits every runner.
The Run Testers, beginner marathoners New Balance 1080 v15 Described as cushioned and comfortable, and usable across training paces.
The Run Testers, discussed in its guide Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 Discussed by the guide; no specific category award is established here.

Runner’s World’s page is titled “The 7 Best Long-Distance Running Shoes,” but the available quick-glance excerpt shows only four entries. The remaining three are not listed here because their identities and categories cannot be confirmed from that excerpt. The other rows are recommendations from their named outlets, not substitutes for those missing entries. Runner’s World; Marathon Handbook; The Run Testers.

How to choose a shoe for long runs and marathon training

Start with the job the shoe will do. A shoe for weekly long runs needs to remain comfortable over the duration and fit securely; a race-day shoe may prioritize low weight and responsiveness. Marathon guides include both specialized racers and more versatile cushioned shoes, so “marathon shoe” does not mean one construction or one best choice. RTINGS describes its options as spanning lightweight race-day shoes and more versatile shoes with varying cushioning. RTINGS’ 2026 guide.

Check fit and comfort first

Try the shoe with the socks you expect to run in. Pay attention to toe room, heel hold, pressure points, and whether your foot feels secure as you move. Consider breathability and the level of cushioning and support that feels comfortable to you. Marathon Handbook emphasizes that comfort is subjective; a category label is not a substitute for how a shoe fits your foot. Marathon Handbook’s selection guide.

ASICS Men's Gel-Nimbus 28 Running Shoes, 10.5, Cold Moss/Illuminate Green
  • Engineered knit upper: A lightweight, breathable knit material that reduces the need for additional overlays.
  • PureGEL technology: Softer, updated version of our GEL technology that maintains all the acclaimed properties that have made GEL technology famous.  Approximately 65% softer vs standard GEL technology.
  • FF BLAST PLUS cushioning: Midsole foam that provides a blend of cloud like cushioning and a responsive ride that is lighter than FF BLAST.
  • OrthoLite X-55 sockliner: Premium sockliner that provides cushioning performance and moisture management for a cooler, dryer environment.
  • Reflective details: Visibility for enhanced nightime and early-morning reflective brightness.

Match the ride and support to your training

Think about the paces you actually plan to run. A shoe intended for fast racing may feel different from a cushioned daily trainer, while some versatile shoes are presented as suitable across training paces. If you have a specific support need, use it as a reason to compare fit and ride—not as a guarantee that a particular model is right for you.

Choose for the surface

Road and trail picks are not interchangeable by default. Trail-marathon recommendations such as Runner’s World’s Saucony Peregrine 17 or Marathon Handbook’s Nike Ultrafly Trail belong in a surface-specific comparison. For road running, prioritize the fit and ride on the surfaces you expect to cover.

Consider durability and value, not just the label

Long-distance use makes comfort, fit security, and outsole traction or durability relevant alongside cushioning. A “value” label does not establish a current price or prove that a shoe costs less than every alternative. Compare current prices and available sizes where you shop, since the cited guides do not establish live inventory or pricing.

Do you need a special shoe to run a marathon?

No. iRunFar says a dedicated special shoe is not required to run a marathon, while noting that footwear may matter to runners aiming for their best performance. That is editorial guidance, not a controlled finding that a particular shoe improves results. Choose a shoe that is comfortable and appropriate for your training rather than assuming a specialized racer is mandatory. iRunFar’s 2026 guide.

When does a race-day shoe make sense?

A specialized racer can be worth considering if your goal is performance and you have already found a fit and ride that work for you. Current marathon guides include lightweight race-day models alongside more versatile training shoes, but their category picks do not establish a guaranteed time benefit. The Run Testers puts the decision plainly: “The best running shoes for the marathon will depend on the type of runner you are, and what your goals are for the race.” The Run Testers, 2026.

If you are a first-time marathoner, The Run Testers recommends the New Balance 1080 v15, describing it as cushioned and comfortable while usable across training paces. Marathon Handbook also lists it as a neutral marathon-training shoe. That makes it a relevant option to compare, not a universal prescription.

A practical shortlist before you buy

  • For general long-distance road use: compare the Nike Vomero 18, Runner’s World’s overall pick, with shoes that fit and feel comfortable at your usual long-run pace.
  • For marathon training: consider the Brooks Glycerin 23 from Runner’s World or the New Balance 1080 v15 from the other guides, then assess fit and support needs.
  • For race-day speed: compare the race-focused categories in Marathon Handbook or the carbon-plate options from The Run Testers; do not assume the lightest or fastest-labeled shoe will work for you.
  • For trail miles: use trail-specific picks such as the Saucony Peregrine 17 or Nike Ultrafly Trail as starting points rather than treating them as road recommendations.
  • For value: Runner’s World names the New Balance Ellipse, while Marathon Handbook names the adidas Adizero Evo SL its value racer. Verify current prices before comparing cost.

Runner’s World’s listed categories are from Amanda Furrer’s guide updated September 22, 2026; Marathon Handbook’s categories are from Thomas Watson’s guide updated September 14, 2026. The other cited guides identify 2026 recommendations, but model availability, fit options, and prices can change.
