There is no well-supported, up-to-date ranking of the world’s 15 largest factories using one consistent measure. The clearest recent list available ranks 10 facilities by gross floor area (GFA); below, those figures are presented as Manufacturing Digital’s January 2026 ranking, not as a verified global census. Four additional industrial giants show why other rankings can look different: they are measured by volume, site area, or a different floor-area estimate.
Why “largest factory” depends on the measurement
A factory can be called largest by its total floor space, ground-level footprint, land area, or enclosed volume. Those measures do not mean the same thing. A multi-building campus or chemical complex also has a different scope from a single production building. A useful comparison therefore names both the metric and what the figure covers.
- Gross floor area (GFA): floor space across the buildings or levels included by the source.
- Building footprint: the ground area occupied by a building; it is not necessarily its total floor space.
- Site area: land within a facility or complex, including open space and support areas.
- Volume: enclosed interior capacity, which can favor a large-span building even if its floor area is lower.
- Scope: a single factory, a multi-building campus, or an industrial complex containing many production plants.
For that reason, the table below keeps to one published metric: GFA as reported in Manufacturing Digital’s January 28, 2026 article. Its figures are approximate and the publication does not provide a common primary-source citation for every facility’s area.

Four other industrial giants that do not fit that ranking cleanly
Boeing Everett: largest by volume
Guinness World Records identifies Boeing Everett as the largest production factory by volume, reporting 13,385,378 m³ and a floor area of 399,480 m² (98.3 acres). The facility opened in 1967 and is used to build Boeing 747, 767, 777, and 787 aircraft. Its record is specifically for volume, so it should not be treated as a GFA ranking.
BASF Ludwigshafen: a large chemical complex measured by site area
BASF describes Ludwigshafen as its largest Verbund site and the world’s largest chemical complex. The company reports a 10 km² site with around 125 production facilities and around 200 production plants. That is a sprawling, multi-plant complex and a site-area figure—not a comparable GFA figure for one factory.

Kentucky Truck Plant: site acreage is not floor area
Ford’s Global Offices & Plants directory gives Kentucky Truck Plant a site size of 500 acres and lists F-250–F-550 Super Duty trucks, Expedition, and Navigator among its current products. The directory’s approximately 8,912 employees is a June 2026 headcount. Neither the acreage nor the headcount is a measure of gross floor area.
Wolfsburg: published figures differ in scope
Wolfsburg appears at the top of Manufacturing Digital’s 2026 GFA ranking at about 6.5 million m². A November 2023 loveMONEY gallery, also described as a floor-area ranking, reports 1.6 million m² for Wolfsburg’s factory halls within a larger site. These figures should not be silently treated as the same quantity: their stated scope and source differ. The disagreement is a practical reminder to check what each number covers before comparing rankings.

Why published rankings disagree
The 2023 loveMONEY gallery lists 25 facilities by floor area, while Manufacturing Digital’s January 2026 article lists 10 by GFA. Their entries and ordering differ. The older gallery includes Foxconn Zhengzhou at 2.8 million m², BYD Hefei at 2.6 million m², Hyundai Ulsan at 2.31 million m², CATL Fuding at 1.9 million m², Volkswagen Wolfsburg at 1.6 million m² of factory halls, and Boeing Everett at 399,480 m². Those are figures as reported by that gallery; the mix of scopes and the different publication dates mean its additional entries cannot safely be appended to the newer ranking as places 11 through 15.
Factories also expand, add buildings, or change production over time. A ranking should therefore be read as a dated account of the source’s chosen metric and facilities, not as a permanent record of every industrial site worldwide.
What the rankings say—and what they do not
The 2026 list offers a useful snapshot of large manufacturing campuses, from automotive and electronics sites to battery and semiconductor operations. But the available published figures do not establish a definitive current top 15 on a consistent, primary-verified GFA basis. The strongest precise record claim in these sources is metric-specific: Boeing Everett is largest by volume according to Guinness World Records. BASF Ludwigshafen illustrates a different category altogether, a multi-plant complex described by its operator using site area.
