There is no evidence-backed ranking of 38 specific “best” classic engagement rings here. A more useful way to choose is to compare familiar designs—such as solitaire, halo, and three-stone settings—then assess the diamond, setting, and total cost against your preferences and budget.
Which engagement ring styles are considered classic?
“Classic” describes recognizable designs, not a guarantee that a particular ring suits every wearer or budget. Start by choosing the overall setting, then consider the center stone’s shape. GIA’s guides cover several established options.
Solitaire
A solitaire keeps one center stone as the focal point. It can be held by prongs or a bezel, or incorporated into a cathedral or tension setting. These approaches differ in appearance and in how the stone is held; compare the specific design rather than treating every solitaire as identical. GIA’s engagement-ring style guide describes these setting options.
Halo and side stones
A halo places accent stones around the center diamond, while side stones add accents beside it. Both designs draw attention to the center stone while giving the ring a more detailed look than a plain solitaire. GIA discusses these options in its engagement-ring style guide.
#1 Best Overall
- D-COLOR VVS1 MOISSANITE – A 1 CT round lab-created moissanite center stone with D color, VVS1 clarity and Ideal Cut defines the solitaire profile.
- CLASSIC SOLITAIRE – A single round center stone creates a clean engagement-ring profile for proposals, promises, anniversaries or everyday wear.
- S925 STERLING SILVER – Crafted in S925 sterling silver with an 18K white gold plated finish; plated sterling silver, not solid 18K gold.
- SIZE 7 ENGAGEMENT RING – The selected variation is Size 7. Please confirm the CT, finish and ring size shown before ordering.
- IMOLOVE – SHINE BRIGHT, SPEND LIGHT – A lab-created moissanite ring designed for engagements, promises and meaningful moments.
Three-stone
A three-stone ring pairs a center stone with two additional stones. GIA includes it among classic engagement-ring designs. Check how the stones are arranged and secured, as well as whether the overall look fits the wearer’s taste.
How should you choose a diamond shape?
Shape affects a diamond’s outline and the way it looks in a setting. Round brilliant is a familiar, enduring choice, but it is not the only classic option. GIA’s shape guide also covers princess, emerald, marquise, Asscher, and vintage cuts, among others. Browse the GIA diamond-shape guide to compare silhouettes.

One important distinction: GIA awards an official cut grade only to round brilliant diamonds. Its cut scale ranges from Excellent to Poor. Do not assume that a fancy shape receives the same GIA cut grade or compare its cut as if it did. Shape and cut are related but distinct: shape describes the outline, while cut grading evaluates a diamond’s cut quality.
Consider the shape together with the setting. For example, GIA notes that princess-cut corners may need protection; marquise points can be guarded with prongs or V-shaped protections. Ask how the design secures vulnerable points rather than judging protection from a product photo.

How do you compare diamond quality?
Use the 4Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat weight—to compare diamonds. GIA advises buyers to understand these criteria before purchasing. The 4Cs help organize the comparison, but they do not determine which trade-offs are right for you: decide which qualities matter most within your budget. See GIA’s diamond engagement-ring buying guide.
- Cut: Consider cut quality, while remembering that GIA’s official cut grade applies only to round brilliant diamonds.
- Color: Compare the diamond’s color and how it appears in the ring you are considering.
- Clarity: Review the diamond’s clarity information rather than relying on a seller’s photo alone.
- Carat weight: Compare the stated weight alongside the other Cs; weight alone does not describe the diamond’s appearance or quality.
What should you inspect beyond the center stone?
A ring is a combination of diamond, setting, band, and any accent stones. Consider the band metal, setting style, and side stones as part of the decision—not as afterthoughts. GIA recommends viewing diamonds under different lighting conditions, because a single product photo cannot show how a stone looks in every environment. If possible, compare the ring in person and ask to see the diamond under more than one type of light.

- Check that the setting suits the chosen shape and secures the stone appropriately.
- Consider whether the band metal and overall design fit the wearer’s style.
- Assess side stones or a halo as part of the complete design and purchase cost.
- Think about everyday wear and the wearer’s lifestyle when comparing setting details.
What documentation should you request?
Ask for an independent grading report for the diamond. GIA recommends this documentation as a way to validate a diamond’s quality and gives its own reports as an example. Review the report details against the diamond being offered, and do not treat a seller’s description or a ring photograph as a substitute for grading documentation. Read GIA’s guidance on diamond grading reports.
How can you make a practical shortlist?
- Choose the design: Decide whether the wearer prefers a solitaire, halo, three-stone ring, or another recognizable style.
- Select a shape: Compare the center stone’s outline, then check what the chosen setting does to protect and display it.
- Set priorities for the 4Cs: Decide which diamond characteristics matter most before comparing stones.
- Compare the whole ring: Review the metal, setting, side stones, and appearance in different lighting—not just the center diamond.
- Check the documentation and price: Request an independent grading report and make sure the complete ring fits the budget.
These are useful comparison points, not a universal scoring formula. The best choice is the ring whose design, diamond characteristics, documentation, and total cost align with the wearer’s preferences.
