Historical accounts put a $165 million yacht called Project Mars at the top of a list of Harrods’ most expensive items, but the record is disputed: a 2011 report named a £100 million yacht as Harrods’ priciest sale. Why Harrods’ most expensive sale is disputed
Harrods’ Knightsbridge flagship began in 1849 as a general store and purveyor of tea, according to the retailer’s anniversary history. An Alux.com roundup, published circa 2013, and a 2014 Financial Express article both identify the yacht Project Mars at $165 million. By contrast, The Standard reported in 2011 that a £100 million yacht had broken Harrods’ record for the most expensive item sold. The sources do not establish whether the reports refer to the same yacht or transaction, or explain the different prices. The figures use different currencies and should not be treated as directly comparable.

How to interpret the prices
- They are historical, not current quotes. The list dates to circa 2013–2014; it does not show what any item would cost today.
- They are not a single verified ranking. The articles do not provide a sales ledger or consistent evidence that every listed price was realized in a completed sale.
- Keep currencies as published. The yacht is quoted in dollars in the roundup and pounds in The Standard’s separate 2011 report. No conversion or inflation adjustment is appropriate without additional, date-specific evidence.
- Extraordinary price does not mean ordinary retail product. Several entries are bespoke or exceptional luxury goods, and a product category in a list does not establish that a comparable item is readily available to buy.
