Its clearest recent examples of building local capability are engineering centres, a Gurugram avionics maintenance facility, announced support contracts with IndiGo, and a production partnership with Bharat Dynamics Limited. These announcements show the kinds of work Thales says it is undertaking in India; they do not independently measure its contribution to the country’s economic growth.
What Thales says about its presence in India
Thales reports that it has been present in India since 1953 and is headquartered in Noida. The company says it has more than 2,200 employees in India, including staff at its joint ventures. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited workforce count. Thales’ India profile describes its local footprint and activities.
The company identifies two engineering competence centres. Noida focuses on Cyber & Digital, while Bengaluru works on hardware, software and systems engineering for civil and defence applications. Together, these centres illustrate an engineering presence beyond sales and customer support, though the profile does not quantify the centres’ output or local economic effect.

Gurugram facility: bringing avionics maintenance onshore
In March 2025, Thales announced a Gurugram avionics maintenance and repair facility, describing it as a local service capability for Indian airline customers. The announcement frames the centre as a way to provide onshore MRO—maintenance, repair and overhaul—rather than relying solely on support located outside India. It does not give a measured turnaround-time improvement, investment total or job count. Thales’ announcement of the facility attributes to India’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, the statement: “My heartfelt appreciation goes to Thales for setting up this dedicated facility in India to provide onshore MRO services to our airlines.”

IndiGo contracts: announced terms and scope
In September 2025, Thales announced two arrangements with IndiGo: an 11-year avionics maintenance contract covering more than 1,200 aircraft and a five-year, fleet-wide Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) rollout. An EFB is a digital tool used by flight crews to access operational information. The announcement states contract scope and duration; it does not establish that all work has been completed or document performance results. Thales’ release on the IndiGo contracts is the source for the terms.
Defence localisation with Bharat Dynamics Limited
Thales and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) announced a production partnership and technology-transfer commitment relating to LBRM air-defence capabilities for India. The announcement positions the arrangement as part of defence localisation, but does not state an audited local-content percentage, production volume or delivery schedule. Those details matter when assessing how much capability will be built domestically, rather than inferring an outcome from the partnership announcement alone. Thales’ announcement with BDL attributes to Pascale Sourisse, President & CEO of Thales International: “This is a momentous occasion for all the stakeholders involved in the development of LBRM Air Defence solutions.”

What “Make in India” means in this context
Thales presents its work in India in the context of Make in India and greater self-reliance. Those are corporate commitments and strategic positioning, not by themselves evidence of measured outcomes. The specific examples—engineering centres, the Gurugram maintenance facility, the IndiGo contracts and the BDL production partnership—show different ways the company says it is developing a local presence. They should not be treated as proof of a particular amount of domestic sourcing, job creation or national growth. Thales’ Aero India 2025 announcement sets out the company’s stated commitment.

The announcements make a case for local capability in engineering, aviation services and defence production. They do not provide comparable investment totals, audited local-procurement figures, independently verified employment data or a net economic-impact measure. For a fuller assessment of Thales’ contribution to India’s growth, those outcome measures would be needed alongside the company’s reported footprint and announced contracts.
