The figures below are realized sale prices, not estimates or appraisals. They are stated in the currencies and years reported by the sources; conversions quoted by auction houses were contemporaneous, not inflation-adjusted. “Record” means a record at the time the sale was reported, not a claim that the result remains unsurpassed.

Sotheby’s describes the pendant’s slightly baroque, drop-shaped natural pearl as approximately 15.90 × 18.35 × 25.85 mm. The pearl and diamond bow were part of a larger historic jewelry ensemble, and the 2018 price was for the pendant—not a stand-alone valuation of the pearl.

Sotheby’s says the jewels were believed to have been packed for safekeeping in 1791 and later passed through Marie-Thérèse de France to the Bourbon-Parma family. La Peregrina
Christie’s reported the $11,842,500 result in 2011 and described La Peregrina as a 16th-century pearl. Its record language applied to the historic pearl and pearl jewel at that time. The figure should therefore be read as the auction price of the jewel, not as a benchmark for a loose pearl of similar size.

The Baroda necklace and other multi-pearl lots
The Baroda result represents a two-strand natural pearl necklace plus associated jewelry. Its 68 graduated pearls make clear why a necklace’s total cannot be compared directly with the price of one pearl. The 2004 sale reported by JCK is also for a complete necklace of 88 natural pearls, not an individual stone.
How to read claims about pearl value
- Check what was sold. A pendant, necklace, or jewelry suite includes more than the pearl or pearls. Look for a lot description before treating a headline price as a pearl-only value.
- Separate a sale from an estimate. An estimate, insurance appraisal, or advertised asking price is not a realized auction result.
- Keep the date and currency attached. These are historical nominal prices. The dollar equivalent reported alongside the 2018 CHF sale is a contemporaneous conversion, not an inflation-adjusted comparison with earlier dollar sales.
- Treat records as time-bound. Sotheby’s and Christie’s record descriptions refer to the point when each sale was reported; they do not by themselves establish the current record-holder.
- Distinguish natural from cultured pearls. The named lots above are described as natural pearls or historic pearl jewels. Their prices do not establish what a modern cultured-pearl necklace is worth.
What these sales do—and do not—show
The records show that important natural pearls can command extraordinary prices when sold as jewels with distinctive design, history, and provenance. They do not provide a clean league table of the world’s ten most expensive individual pearls: the documented results are few and the lots are not like-for-like.
