A useful overview is to identify the traditional Big Five—Disney, Universal, Warner Bros., Sony and Paramount—and five additional theatrical competitors: Lionsgate, A24, Amazon MGM Studios, Apple Studios and Netflix. This is a criteria-based selection, not a measured 1–10 ranking. The latest ownership change is significant: Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, creating a combined company named Skydance.
Why there is no reliable top-ten order
A box-office ranking requires a defined territory and time period; a revenue ranking measures companies rather than individual film labels. Release counts, franchise ownership and production resources offer still other comparisons. Those measures cannot be combined into one objective “biggest” score without choosing and explaining a method.

The European Commission identifies Disney, Universal, Warner, Sony and Paramount as the traditional Big Five in its theatrical-market review. It also discusses Lionsgate, A24, Amazon MGM and Apple as relevant competitors or entrants. Together with Netflix, these make a useful ten-name field, but not a ranking: the available evidence does not establish comparable figures for all ten on one measure.
The ten studios and what makes them significant
The studios below are grouped by market role, not ranked within either group. Corporate parents and studio labels are not interchangeable; in particular, the Paramount and Warner Bros. businesses now sit under the combined Skydance company.

The traditional Big Five
- Disney. Disney is a traditional major and a leading theatrical distributor. The Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) reported that Disney had the highest global studio box office in 2025, at $6.6 billion, while noting that global totals were still being collated at publication. In the UK and Ireland, Disney recorded £247 million and a 23% share of distributor box office that year. FDA’s 2025 box-office report.
- Universal. Universal led the UK and Ireland theatrical-distributor figures in 2025, with £269 million and a 25% share, according to the FDA. The European Commission’s review also records 19 Universal releases in the European Economic Area (EEA) in 2023 and 23 in 2025. Those are regional release counts, not a measure of its worldwide output. FDA report; European Commission decision.
- Warner Bros. The FDA recorded £197 million and a 19% UK and Ireland distributor share for Warner Bros. in 2025. Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2026 shareholder letter reported $4.4 billion in Warner Bros. global box office for 2025. These are figures for different territories and sources, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026; the combined company is named Skydance. FDA report; Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder letter; Skydance’s acquisition announcement.
- Sony Pictures. Sony is one of the European Commission’s traditional Big Five. The cited figures do not establish a current, comparable rank for Sony against the other studios, so its inclusion reflects its established major-studio status rather than a claimed position in a box-office table. European Commission decision.
- Paramount Pictures. Paramount is also a traditional Big Five studio. Its parent completed the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition in October 2026, making “Paramount” and “Warner Bros.” studio labels within the same combined corporate group rather than independent current parents. Paramount’s official history describes its production lot as 65 acres with thirty stages; that illustrates physical production infrastructure, not a financial-size ranking. European Commission decision; Skydance announcement; Paramount history.
Five additional theatrical competitors
- Lionsgate. Lionsgate operates in film and television production and distribution. Its 2026 SEC filing describes a library exceeding 20,000 titles and documents the 2025 separation of its studio business from Starz. Starz should therefore not be described as part of the studio company on the basis of older corporate arrangements. A large library is one indicator of scale, but it is not directly comparable to theatrical box office. Lionsgate Studios SEC filing.
- A24. A24 is a theatrical competitor with a smaller release slate than the traditional majors in the EEA figures cited by the Commission: nine releases in both 2024 and 2025. That count says something about output in that region and period, not total company size or cultural reach. European Commission decision.
- Amazon MGM Studios. Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, adding the historic studio to a technology and entertainment company. The Commission says Amazon MGM announced a goal of 14 theatrical releases in 2026 and 15 annually by 2027. These are company plans cited in the decision, not proof that the planned releases occurred or a global output ranking. European Commission decision.
- Apple Studios. The Commission identifies Apple as a theatrical entrant, with theatrical production since 2023. Its inclusion reflects its participation in the film market; the cited material does not provide a comparable box-office or release-volume figure that would place it in an exact order with the majors. European Commission decision.
- Netflix. Netflix is included here as a major film producer and distributor with theatrical activity, broadening the list beyond legacy studio groups. The cited figures do not establish a comparable 2025 theatrical box-office total or release count for Netflix, so this selection does not claim it ranks above or below any other entry. Its presence also illustrates why “Hollywood studio” needs a stated definition: the term can include companies whose main business is not a traditional theatrical studio.
What the available box-office numbers actually show
The FDA’s 2025 UK and Ireland data offer a comparable snapshot for three distributors in one territory. They do not rank all ten studios, and distributor share in that market is not the same as global corporate revenue.
| Distributor | UK and Ireland box office, 2025 | Share, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Universal | £269 million | 25% |
| Disney | £247 million | 23% |
| Warner Bros. | £197 million | 19% |
These figures are reported by the Film Distributors’ Association. Its report also says 1,092 new titles were released in UK and Irish cinemas during 2025. The same report’s global comparison is narrower: it names Disney at $6.6 billion, while Warner Bros. Discovery separately reported $4.4 billion for Warner Bros. in its 2026 shareholder letter. Neither source supplies a single, consistent global table for all ten entries.

What makes a studio “big” beyond box office
The European Commission’s review, summarizing evidence from its market investigation, says “access to valuable IP, the ability to attract talent and the overall production budget for the slate of film releases are the most important parameters for a film studio to be successful.” That helps explain why no one metric captures the whole market.
- Box office shows ticket sales associated with a distributor’s releases in a specified territory and period. It is not the studio’s revenue: cinemas and distributors share ticket proceeds, and box office does not include streaming or other business lines.
- Release volume indicates how many films reach theaters, but a larger slate does not necessarily mean higher earnings or greater influence. The Commission found the Big Five released 10 to 18 films per year in the EEA during 2023–2025, with the Universal exceptions noted above.
- Intellectual property and libraries can support sequels, adaptations and long-term licensing. Library size, however, does not translate directly into current theatrical market share.
- Budgets and talent access influence the ability to develop and market films, but budget alone does not predict audience demand or profitability.
- Corporate scale includes activities outside film production and distribution. A parent company’s overall revenue should not be presented as a studio’s box office or film-business revenue.
How to read a Hollywood-studio ranking
Before trusting a “biggest studios” list, check what its order measures. A credible ranking should name the metric, identify the geography and period, and use the same basis for every entry. If it mixes global box office for one studio, regional distributor receipts for another and parent-company revenue for a third, it is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Corporate ownership also changes what “studio” means. Following the October 2026 acquisition, Paramount and Warner Bros. remain distinct studio identities, but they belong to a combined company named Skydance. A list of studio brands may count them separately; a list of independent corporate parents should not.
