In a July 12, 2025, Agri-Pulse interview, Rep. Shri Thanedar said proposed SNAP reductions could hurt people in his Detroit-area district and ripple through the food supply chain. He also argued that nutrition cuts had weakened trust needed for bipartisan work on a “skinny” Farm Bill. The interview records his views at that time; it does not establish current SNAP policy or later Farm Bill developments.

What Thanedar said about SNAP cuts

Thanedar, a House Agriculture Committee member representing Detroit and Metro Detroit, said reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could harm his constituents. He estimated that 29% of people in his district depended on SNAP. That was his figure in the interview, not an independently verified estimate in the accompanying article.

He also warned that state funding requirements could make it difficult for states to maintain benefits. The interview captures this concern amid debate over nutrition provisions in a reconciliation bill in July 2025; it does not establish the provisions’ present status or their subsequent implementation.

How he connected SNAP benefits to farmers

Thanedar’s argument extended beyond households receiving food assistance: he said lower benefits could reduce food demand and affect manufacturers, packagers, truckers, small businesses and farmers. He characterized SNAP spending as support for activity throughout the food economy.

To express that point, he said, “Every dollar that we invest in the SNAP program, it impacts about $1.50 to the whole economy.” This is Thanedar’s claim in the interview, not a multiplier independently substantiated by the interview source.

Why the interview linked SNAP to a “skinny” Farm Bill

Thanedar said cuts to nutrition programs had damaged trust between lawmakers, making bipartisan Farm Bill negotiations harder. He did not suggest that a narrower bill would pass easily. “I don’t think it’s gonna be a smooth sailing for the, what you call the Skinny Farm Bill,” he said.

His stated priorities were to restore some nutrition-program losses and address the difficulties facing rural farmers. As he put it, “The particular thing that I want to address is not only restoring some of the losses in the nutritional program, but also, rural farmers are hurting.” The interview documents his position in July 2025; it is not a status report on later negotiations.

What the interview does—and does not—establish

The Agri-Pulse Newsmakers interview, hosted by Andrew Huneke and published July 12, 2025, is useful for understanding Thanedar’s concerns and priorities at that point in the debate. Its transcript is labeled unedited. The district-dependence figure, economic multiplier and forecasts about effects should therefore be read as claims made by interview participants, not as independently verified findings. The interview alone cannot confirm current SNAP rules, the effects of later policy changes or the outcome of Farm Bill negotiations.
