PhoneArena reported on October 28, 2024, that an unnamed insider claimed the company might cut some employees in its Smaller Markets and Rural Areas (SMRA) operation during the first quarter of 2025. PhoneArena described the claim as an unverified rumor that could be false. The forecast period has passed, but the report does not establish whether any layoffs occurred.
What the October 2024 report claimed
PhoneArena’s October 28, 2024, article attributed the possibility of job cuts to one unnamed insider. It said some employees in T-Mobile’s Smaller Markets and Rural Areas operation might be affected in Q1 2025. The report did not name employees, identify stores or locations, or give a count of potential cuts. Read the PhoneArena report.
The article also raised the possibility that some SMRA stores could close, but it did not confirm any closures. The distinction matters: a reported possibility is not evidence that a company made or carried out a decision.
Did T-Mobile carry out the rumored cuts?
The report only forecast possible cuts for Q1 2025; it does not verify what happened after that period. It therefore cannot establish whether T-Mobile laid off SMRA employees, closed stores, or took neither action. Without a reliable account confirming the outcome, the rumor should not be presented as a completed round of layoffs.

Why the article speculated about stores and growth
PhoneArena connected the rumor to reported comments by T-Mobile executives about Q3 being the company’s best quarter for winning rural market share. It suggested that ambitious growth expectations, redundant locations, or low-traffic stores might help explain possible closures. Those were the article’s proposed explanations, not reasons confirmed by T-Mobile.
PhoneArena also compared the rumor with an earlier August leak about a reorganization and possible job eliminations, which it said did not come to pass. That comparison is PhoneArena’s account; it does not independently verify the later SMRA rumor or its outcome.
