U.S. farmers sold more corn in January 2025 after a USDA crop estimate helped lift futures prices, creating a better chance to lock in revenue. The rally did not erase farmers’ high production costs or resolve concerns about export demand. The episode is a snapshot of that market moment, not a report on prices or sales today.
Why were farmers selling more corn?
On January 16, 2025, Reuters reported that corn futures had reached their highest level in more than a year and risen about 10% over the preceding month. Grain dealers in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska said farmers had increased sales after the U.S. Department of Agriculture lowered its estimates for the 2024 crop on January 10.
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported 2024 U.S. corn production of 14.9 billion bushels, 3% below 2023, while estimating a record yield of 179.3 bushels per acre. The same release put corn stored in all positions on December 1, 2024, at 12.1 billion bushels, down 1% from a year earlier. Those figures describe production, yield, and stocks; Reuters’ accounts describe farmers’ sales behavior. USDA NASS’s January 10, 2025 release and the Reuters report cover different parts of the story.
What did the reported sales and bids show?
The examples in the Reuters report indicate that the higher market offered some farmers a reason to sell, but they are not a nationwide measure. Specialty grain buyer Ben Scholl said he handled about 20% of his normal annual corn sales in the preceding four weeks. An Ohio farmer cited a $5-per-bushel cash bid for immediate or later delivery and said local bids the previous fall had been about $4.30 per bushel. Both prices are local examples from January 2025, not a national average or current quote.

A cash bid is the price a buyer offers for grain delivered under specified terms. The delivery date matters: an immediate-delivery bid and a later-delivery bid can differ, and a local offer does not by itself tell a farmer what remains after storage, transport, and other costs. The Reuters story illustrates those choices but does not establish a universal marketing strategy.
Did the price rally make corn farming profitable?
No. A higher selling opportunity can improve expected revenue, but it does not automatically cover the cost of producing a crop. Reuters reported that farmers still faced bills for seed, chemicals, and land rent ahead of spring planting. Betty Resnick, an economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation, said the rally would not erase that year’s steep losses or fundamentally change the bleak profitability outlook for row crops.

That distinction matters for a farm’s cash flow: selling some crop at a stronger price may help secure revenue or meet upcoming expenses, while the farm’s overall result still depends on costs, yields, and the amount and price of grain sold. Iowa farmer Caleb Hamer described the motivation succinctly: “You’ve got to lock in some sales to guarantee revenue.” His remark explains one farmer’s decision-making, not a recommendation that every farmer sell at the same time.

Participants in the January 2025 report worried that possible tariffs and retaliation could weaken demand for U.S. agricultural exports, including sales to China. Landus CEO Matt Carstens said the demand outlook was uncertain amid those concerns. This was a risk raised at the time; the Reuters report does not establish later policy decisions or their effects on corn demand.

What this January 2025 episode does—and does not—tell readers
- It was a particular market moment: Reuters described a January 2025 futures rally following a USDA estimate revision. Its price observations are not current market data.
- The sales evidence was anecdotal: dealer and buyer accounts show increased activity in parts of the Midwest, but Reuters did not provide an aggregate national sales tally.
- Higher prices and farm profitability are not the same thing: the selling opportunity improved while significant production costs and uncertainty remained.
- Later outcomes are not established by the report: the cited tariff and export-demand concerns were contemporaneous worries, not proof of what subsequently happened.
