That was a survey-based projection—not a final count of planted acres. A separate USDA survey put March intentions higher, at 95.3 million acres; USDA’s later June estimate of corn actually planted was 95.2 million acres.
What did the Pro Farmer survey find?
Pro Farmer reported that its survey projected 93.75 million U.S. corn acres for 2025, up 3.5% year over year. Among respondents planning to shift acreage, 60% expected to plant more corn. The result describes farmers’ 2025 planting intentions as reported in the survey, not a verified tally of what they ultimately planted. Pro Farmer’s March 21, 2025 report presents the projection and respondent plans.
How did that compare with USDA’s March estimate?
USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) published a separate March estimate of 95.3 million corn acres, up 5% from 2024. Its report also estimated 83.5 million soybean acres, down 4%. NASS said it surveyed nearly 74,000 farm operators during the first two weeks of March. The agency described its report as the first official, survey-based estimates of farmers’ 2025 planting intentions. USDA NASS’s March 31, 2025 release gives those figures.
The Pro Farmer/Doane projection and USDA estimate are results from different surveys. The Pro Farmer report provides projections and responses about acreage shifts, while the available information does not establish matching sampling designs or comparable measures of uncertainty. The figures should therefore be read side by side, not treated as competing estimates produced on an identical basis.

How many acres of corn did farmers plant in 2025?
USDA NASS’s June 30, 2025 Acreage report estimated 95.2 million acres of corn planted, 5% more than in 2024. It estimated 83.4 million soybean acres planted, down 4%. These are later planted-acre estimates, not the March intentions figures. NASS said it surveyed approximately 67,700 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to collect information on what they had planted. See the June 30, 2025 USDA NASS report.
The June estimates show corn acreage rising while soybean acreage fell nationally. They do not establish that every additional corn acre came directly from soybeans, or explain individual farmers’ decisions. USDA describes its Crops/Stocks surveys as using area and list frames to produce multiple-frame estimates; its collection schedule distinguishes March intentions from June planted-acre and expected-harvest estimates. More detail is available in the USDA NASS Crops/Stocks survey description and the National Agricultural Library’s Prospective Plantings report archive.
