Tapal’s story began in Karachi in 1947 as a tea-importing retail business, according to the company. It later developed into a tea blender and seller with a portfolio tailored to different tastes and formats. Tapal says its products now reach more than 15 countries across six continents; that export reach is a company-reported figure, not an independently enumerated list of destinations.
How Tapal began in Karachi
Tapal Tea says Adam Ali Tapal founded the business as a retail outlet in Jodia Bazaar, Karachi, in 1947. The company says its first operations involved importing tea from Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon. That founding date refers to the start of the business, not the incorporation of the later private limited company.
The Competition Commission of Pakistan’s 2019 tea-industry assessment records Tapal Tea (Private) Limited as incorporated on 13 March 1979. It describes the company’s principal activity as blending and selling tea and related products under the Tapal name. The two dates mark different milestones: a business origin in 1947 and formal corporate incorporation in 1979.
From Family Mixture to a broader tea portfolio
Tapal identifies Family Mixture as its first brand, introduced in 1947. Its timeline traces subsequent investment in production and new products: mechanized blending in 1980, the first packaging machine in 1982, green tea in 2000 and Tezdum in 2003.

- Orange Pekoe Danedar Tea

There is a small but notable discrepancy in Tapal’s own sources on Danedar’s launch. The company timeline gives 1988, while the dedicated Danedar product page says 1987. The safest description is that Danedar arrived in the late 1980s.
The current catalog spans several kinds of tea and preparation formats, rather than a single blend:
Rank #2
- Tapal Danedaar 2 cup round teabags
- 300 count black teabags
- Product of India
- Danedar: a signature tea brand presented in hard packs, sachets, pouches, a jar and tea bags.
- Family Mixture: the company’s first brand, still listed in its catalog.
- Mezban, Tezdum and Chenak: additional black-tea brands.
- Green tea and Gulbahar: options in the green-tea category; Tapal positions Gulbahar for northern preferences for sabz chai or Kashmiri chai.
- Instant tea and herbal-fruit infusions: formats beyond conventional loose or bagged tea.
Tapal presents Family Mixture as a strong tea associated with Karachi tastes and Gulbahar as suited to northern preferences. These are the company’s descriptions of its products and regional positioning, not findings from independent consumer research.
How the company describes its scale
Tapal’s undated About Us page says the company entered export markets through Saudi Arabia and now has a presence in more than 15 countries across six continents. This is Tapal’s reported reach; the cited company material does not list the destinations or independently verify the count.

Tapal’s undated homepage also reports more than 128,000 retail stores in Pakistan, around 500 employees across two factories and market share above 50 percent. The page does not specify a measurement year or, for market share, a methodology. These figures should therefore be read as company claims, not as independently confirmed current statistics.

Tapal’s history connects a local retail beginning to a portfolio spanning blends, green tea, instant products and infusions. The company’s own account emphasizes product development, distribution and exports as parts of that growth. Its figures and regional descriptions help explain how Tapal presents its business, but they do not by themselves establish current market performance or consumer preference.
