Target Drive Up Returns let eligible shoppers start a return in the Target app, drive to a participating store, and hand the item to a team member at their vehicle. Target says the service is free and available at nearly every Target store nationwide; check the item and your selected store in the app before heading out.
How to make a Target Drive Up return
- Start the return in the Target app. Find the purchase and follow the return prompts. Target’s launch instructions describe an app-guided process, but the exact current button names and screens are not confirmed and may change.
- Follow the app’s Drive Up instructions. Target says to use the regular Drive Up arrival process after initiating the return. Verify that the option is available for your item and selected store.
- Stay in your vehicle for the handoff. A team member retrieves the return from your car and completes the handoff. You do not need to mail it or go to the returns counter when using this option.
Does Target charge for Drive Up Returns?
No. Target describes Drive Up as free, and its 2023 materials say there is no charge for Drive Up Returns. The current Pickup & Delivery page says Drive Up is free. There is no separate fee for using the car-side return service.
Which items can you return this way?
Drive Up availability is not a guarantee that every return-eligible item can be handed back through this service. Target’s June 26, 2023 fact sheet summarizes its general policy as allowing returns of most new, unopened items within 90 days, and Target-owned brands for up to one year. Those are broad, dated policy summaries—not a complete current eligibility list for Drive Up.
Check the purchase in the Target app and consult Target’s current return policy for the item-specific decision. The official service information does not establish that opened items, every category, or every account-linked purchase qualifies for a Drive Up handoff.

Is Drive Up Returns available at every Target?
Target’s current service page says Drive Up is available at nearly every Target store nationwide and notes that guests can make returns using Drive Up. Target said the feature had reached all stores in its June 2023 fact sheet, but the current wording is more qualified. Check your selected store in the app rather than assuming the return option is available locally. The current page also says ordinary Drive Up orders do not require a pickup window; it does not specify whether return availability varies by location or purchase.
Drive Up handoff versus mailing a return
| Option | What happens | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Drive Up handoff | Initiate the return in the app, follow Drive Up prompts, and give the item to a team member at your vehicle. | Use it only if the app offers it for the item and store. Target says direct handoff can speed processing compared with mailing, but publishes no quantified refund-time comparison. |
| Mail return | Send the return package and wait for shipping and processing. | It avoids a store visit, but involves shipping. The sources do not establish a specific mailing timeline or refund date. |
Target introduced the service in February 2023 as a way to make returns easier for guests. At launch, Mark Schindele, then Target’s executive vice president and chief stores officer, said the company wanted guests to be able to process returns “from the comfort of their car.” The launch announcement describes the app-started return and team-member handoff, but it does not document today’s exact app screens.
